Summary: The Croatian Simmental is a dual purpose breed (meat-milk).
It is the predominant cattle breed in the country (about 75%). The breeding
has been carried out for over more than 80 years, organized particularly
after 1974 and 1991, when the breeding programs were issued. So far, the
breeding results have been notable but, to achieve a greater genetic
progress in the future, primarily in the production of quality meat, it is
important to undertake a series of researches that will make the basis for
the application of modern breeding methods, before all, for the evaluation
of the breeding values of bulls in respect to their economic and production
properties. The goal of our research is to find, the characteristics that
define the fattening capability, the quality and meat composition of the
Simmental in Croatia, kept under controlled conditions. For this purpose 34
traits of 548 sons from 47 bulls have been analyzed. A detailed processing
of the results has been carried out on 326 young bulls, sons of 29 bulls
from the progeny test of meat. For this purpose, the modern data processing
have been used (Harvey, 1987). The acquired values for phenotypic and
genetic traits of essential characteristics will be used to achieve the
more appropriate breeding as well as for the application of specific
technologies for the economical production of quality beef and young beef.
Research goals: The Simmental bulls are, by their number dominant in
Croatia (above 75%). The systematic breeding lasts for over 80 years. The
breed with dual production properties - meat and milk - represents the
bases for the beef production in the country. Although, the results of the
breeding activities, especially of those referring to the increase of the
quantity and the quality of meat are very notable, they are still inferior
to the real possibilities. There are many reasons for this, but the most
important one is the not-knowing of the essential phenotypic and genetic
characteristics of particular traits that determine the fattening ability,
quality and meat composition of Simmental population in Croatia. According
to the already mentioned, the goal of the researches is to define the
phenotypic and genetic characteristics of the Simmental in Croatia. This
researches are required to achieve greater effects in breeding as well as
the application of those technological methods that will assure better
production results.
