Summary: The aim of project is in examing possibilities of developing double-purpose sheep types: that of meat-wool type and the other of milk-meat type for requirements of Republic of Croatia, and to get the idea of capacities requirqd for their production. The research has a practical character, that means that types should be spread gradually and by plan to the country breeds being there analyzed their functioning in respect to differnt sizes of population and housing conditions. The investigation work should take place on two in future designated repro centres ( Gospić for meat-wool type and Poreč for milk-meat type ).The part of breed meliorators is designated to Wirttemberg,Sardinnian and East- Fresian breeds. In the case of developing the meat-wool type crossbreeding should be based on the Pramenka sheep and rams of Wirttemberg breed introducing in the final phase genes of some high fertility breed. For dual-purpose dairy-meat sheep type the basis for crossbreeding should be crossbreeds of Istrian sheep and Sardinnian rams which should be crossed with East-Frisian breed. The genetic development course of both types is going to be analyzed for each group of crossbreeds at which will be monitored manifestations of morphological, phisiological and biochemical indicators pointing to the efficiency of particular improvement degree.

Keywords: Sheep, improvement, meat, milk, wool.

Research goals: A situation in the sheeprearing of Republic of Croatia hasimposed requirements of its planned improvement. In this way theincrease of sheep number (quantity) will be realized as well asthe creation of domestic sheep type which being more productivewill better meet market requirements for sheep products. Work onthe genetic makeup of types should be performed in twodirections: developing domestic improved meat-wool sheep type (inthe ctic improved dairy-meat sheep type (in the coastal-islandpart of Republic of Croatia). Wirttemberg, Sardinnian andEast-Frisian breeds are to be utilized as breed meliorators. Apurpose of project is in examining possibilities of creationdouble-purpose types as well as considering in details theirproduction capacities. The research work is of practicalcharacter because types should spread gradually and according toa plan in country rearing ehere should be analyzed theirfunctioning in regard to population largeness and housingconditions. This would be the right way of upgrading hereditarybasis for increased meat, wool and meat production and the breedmaterial of high quality will be distributed to private breeders(sheepmen). It also represents a supposition for realizingecconomically incentive income of sheeprearing and consequentlythe growing interest of breeders for such kind of production. Atthe same time market requirement for sheep orginating products ofgood quality should be met, their price would be fix and theirimport will be gradually given off.
