Summary: The fertility of gilts and sows showing by the number of
farrowed and especially the number of weaned pigs per sow, fluctuates
between different swine breeds and strains, alterating as well regarding
the successiveness of farrowing. The influence of both parents, the
environment, the treatment to which the animals are subjected, as well as
nutrition are very significant for the expression of distinctive traits of
fertility and surviving of swine, together with the interaction between
these factors. The characteristic of growth is defined as mutually binded
increase in body weight through limited time periods. The growth curve in
its first stage, the stage of self-acceleration, shows a continuously
growing part in which the product is forming, while the second stage, the
stage of self-detaining, shows a slowing down of the process as much as the
products of process are accumulating. In swine populations with mostly
uniform strain structure and both sexes equaly presented, is very important
to be aware of the potential growth possibilities of swine in every stage
of their life.
Research goals: The researches are aiming to establish the
distinctive features of fertility, survival (together with the structure of
losses during the production process), and the speed of swine growth. The
researches include: the strain, number of litters, age of gilts and sows at
first mating and farrowing, seasonal influence on surviving of piglets,
parental influence on litter size, constitution and vitality of piglets,
growth intensity at different age of swine, housing and keeping influence,
invironmental influence. The showing of growth is examined and food
consumption of pigs at the age in which the bigest losses were observed,
that is from weaning to about 12 weeks of age. Showing of growth is
examined and food consumption at the final growth stage of swine, namely up
to the use for breeding. It is necessary to examine the quality of swine
considering the meatfullnes at slaughtering line, as well as to determine
the meatfullnes of gilts and young boars, as one of criterions of
selectioning swine for breeding.
