Summary: During the last five years investigations were conducted on
several common carp and rainbow trout ponds, as well as on the Croatian
open waters. The hydrochemical conditions on carp ponds were unfavourable
during the summer, with the most frequent changes in the quantity of O2,
BOD and COD. The use of potassium salt improved water quality a lot. The
qualitative structure and quantity of phytoplankton did not show
significant differences after the use of mineral fertilizer and chicken
manure. The best economic results were achieved when cereal feed was
followed by fertilization. The extended investigations of carp and trout
intensive feeding resulted in formulation of several commercial feeds. The
use of inactive yeast in carp starters resulted in favourable specific
mass increments, low feeding coefficients and higher survival. The use of
nutritive antibiotic as growth promotor gave good results.
Ichthyohaematological investigations showed the importance of the analyses
of periferal fish blood in the fields of fish condition and
ichthyopatology. In the river Sava, 23 species and subspecies of fish were
detected, dominated by Leuciscus cephalus and Cobitis spp. The
ichthyomass varied a lot. Bentic biomass was dominated by amphipods, with
higher sporadic development of gastropods and larval Trichoptera.
Statistically significant negative correlations (p<0.05) were determined
between the quantity of Hirudinea and several other groups of
invertebrates. The growth of common carp in Vransko lake and the influence
of the introduced freshwater fish on lake zooplankton were also studied.
The work, started on fish genetics, gave the base for the future
investigations in the fields of quantitative genetics and cytogenetics.

Research goals: The main goal of these investigations is to acquire
new knoweledge in imporoving fish culture and protection. The follwing
problems will be examined: -Ecoligal investigations (hydrochemical and
hydrobiological) on different techologies in fish culture and endangered
waters. The influence of some chemical parameters on fisheries, the role of
biological productivity in fish production and ecological changes. -The
problems of fish nutrition in different technologies. Achieving better
additional feed, wich can ensure better physiological use, better mass
increments and survival (fingerlings in particular) and the reduction of
feed coefficients. -Determination of hematological and biochemical
indicators on orfder to diagnose fish condition and health, in connection
with different abiotic, biotic and nutrition conditions. -Determination of
present state of ichthyofauna and fisheries in the open waters. The
obtained results will enable the dermination of ecological and production
standards of water quality in fisheries. The complete feeds will be
improved, together with the physiological condition and health state of
fish. The natural food can be better used. These improvements can reduce
the losses and stabilize production on fish-farms, as well as protect fish
communities in the open waters.
