Summary: It is well known that many scientific and expert
institutions and individuals in Croatia and worldwide investigate the
possibilities to reduce the pollution of natural ecosystems. Rich world
literature on the topic show that technological contamination of ecosystems
causes the harmful effects on biological and biochemical reactions in land
and water ecol-systems. Lack of knowledge of the ecosystems, neglecting of
the undesirable accompanying phenomena of the technology, especially of the
pollution, uncontrolled emission from the stationed and mobile sources, use
of chemicals in agriculture and forestry, contamination of water, are the
most obvious and most frequent reflections of the transformation of the
relation to its environment. Therefore, it is necessary to stimulate
development of endogenous sciences and technology in all areas relating to
biological sources on the earth and natural environment. The exchange of
experiences acquired by research, among countries with similar ecological
and bio-climatic conditions in particular could have outstanding
advantages. For example, the problem of degradation and fertility of soil
deserves greater attention in our country and it is a prospective research
field of all scientific branches dealing with studies of the soil as a
component of -ecol-system. We have devoted our research to: - the
improvement of the quality of the degraded soils by application of special
natural substrata, SPS; - the protection and purification of the
underground waters by application of domestic natural minerals-zeolites.
Keywords: SNS - special natural supstrate, fertilization, neutralization, calcification, microbiological fixation, simulation of growth, denitrification.
Research goals: The ecological issue that recently attracts the
greatest attention is the contamination of soil and water by nitrates.
Therefore, we have directed our research towards these problems. Our aim is
to investigate the efficiency of the application of the natural lime-stone
materials, and special natural substrata (SPS) with silicate-carbonate
base, on fertilization and neutralization value of the treated acid soils.
The main goals of the research were: 1. to determine fertilization and
neutralization value of some natural substrata based on soft lime-stone,
dolomite, and zeolite tuff, in raising the fertility of acid soils, 2. to
investigate the impact of these materials primarily on some chemical
characteristics of the soil, i.e. on the intensity and dynamics of these
changes, 3. to investigate the impact of the type and dose of these
materials on some important ploughing field crops, and to make conclusions
on their application in practice. Since the underground (drinking) water
has been contaminated with high contents of nitrate, which is caused by
intensive agricultural production, i.e. intensive fertilization with easy
fusible nitrates, the impact of the SPS on NO3 - in the underground water
has been observed. It is our intention to make such fertilizer that would
contain 50 % less easy fusible nitrates in fertilization. By the
application of natural zeolites in SPS composition, ion exchange of NH4
ions and absorption of NO3 has been made. The results of our studies have
been published in many essays and papers presented at international
meetings.
