Title: Productivity of work for the production of sugar beet
- Authors:
- Kanisek, Jozo (20094)
Summary: During the last ten years the area of 29.000 hectares was
covered with sugar beet in the Republic of Croatia. The yields are
approximately 43 t/ha. The produced quantity of the root is between
1.000.000 - 1.400.000 metric tons. The capacities for the production of
sugar beet, are being used with approximately 70%. The present production
of sugar doesn't satisfy the inland consumption.
The farms that were included in the research, spend 170 hours of manpower
work and approximately 26,91 hours of machine activity per hectare. For the
production of 1 t of the root between 3,51 and 4,68 hours of manpower work
are being spend. For one hour of manpower work from 214 to 285 kg of the
root are being produced. The costs of wages, day's wages and machine
activities make from 25,3 to 41,6% of total costs. The threshold for the
cover of total costs is from 39,57 to 52,62 t/ha.
The work productivitiy is low and this has an effect on the wages and day's
wages, profitability and economical quality of the sugar beet production.

Summary: Hay production is known for considerable work consumption
of people and machinery which results in a low production, unprofitability
und uneconomical production. With present means of mechanization hay
storing process can be done with the consumption of 18,02 hours/ha of men's
work. That consumption is higher by 7,67 hours/ha. Hay holding and
unloading acitivities are aspecially critical. Tractor work should be
reduced from 6,67 hours/ha to 1,88 hours/ha. In that way productivity would
increase from 327 to 456 kg/hour. Direct costs of lucerne production would
be out down for 18,94% and buying cost of lucerne would be reduced for
13,6%.

Title: Determination of protective price of sugar beet roots

Summary: Approximately 29.000 hectares were planted with sugar beet
in the 1990s in the Republic of Croatia. The average yield was about
44t/ha. After Serbian aggression the hectarage under sugar beet dropped by
almost 50 percent. Because of the need for sugar beet it is now planted on
unsuitable soils and the yield has fallen to less than 40t/ha. Until now
the price of sugar beet depended on the price of wheat, but nowadays this
parity is more liberal. The government provides price support of DM 18.-
per planting unit of seed and DM 87.- per ton of mineral fertilizers in
order to enhance sugar beet production. There is also an additional support
of DM 13.- per ton of sugar beet roots. Sugar refiners pay additional DM
7.- for each ton of roots delivered to the refinery. The total inputs in
the sugar beet production amount to approximately DM 3500-/ha. It is often
the case that the value of production does not cover these inputs which
means that some producers incur losses, especially when the climatic
conditions are not favourable. This research has developed a model of
analytic calculation based on the standards of input of working hours,
material and machinery. This model reduces the difference between input
costs and the value of production. It is suggested that the government
should consider standards for the input costs when determining the
protective price of sugar beet.

Title: Influence of several agronomic factors on the production
of sugar beet
- Authors:
- Kanisek, Jozo (20094)
- Kristek, A.
Summary: The research influence of several factors on the production
and economy of sugar beet was based on data collected from 1980. to 1992.
The farms, that were included in the research, are located in Slavonia. For
research series of 120 data were formed. The following methods have been
used: mathematical - statistical methods of correlation, regression and
analysis of productional function. Climatic factors have influenced the
yield of sugar beet. During the research period approximately 1,9 - 260.000
seeds per ha were used per year. The totally applied mineral fertilizers
increased from 370 to 490 kg/ha. The nitrogen was applied at the amount of
140 kg/ha. The quntity of phosphorous increased from 85 to 143 and of
potassium from 150 to 200 kg/ha. The average yield of sugar beet ranged
from 42,15 to 54,96 t/ha. In the production of sugar beet, approximately 20
to 45 hours per ha of machinery activity were applied. The hours of human
labour are also high per ha. On about 42,4% of the fields over 175 hours of
human labour per ha were spent. These represented 22% of the total costs.
The work productivity is low. Indirect costs to attain 30% in total costs.
Production is sometimes non profitable and non economicaly. To balance the
total costs is necessary 45,66 t/ha of yield.

Summary: The wheat utilization is still growing in the world.
European contribution in this consumation is about 39%. One dela of
European countries of there natural position have no enough quality
domestic production wheat and they must import some wheat. Republic of
Croatia own ideal conditions for the wheat production in her contitental -
panonic region. From the east to the west the rainfalls quantity is
growing, soil quality fall together with rainfalls quantity is growing,
soil quality fall together with her wheat yield. Average fertilizers
utilization is low about 71 kg NPK per ha of tillable sufaces. Untill 1991.
Croatia disposed wheat surplus because of enorm fertilizers utilization
andbetter technology agricultural companies and cooperatives made 5,51 and
private producers 3,9 t/ha or 43,9%. In the middle Slavonia region maximal
yield 6,996 t/ha become by utilization 178,1 kg N/ha. The economic justify
utilization in our condition is 165,5 kg N/ha and nitrogen utilization
equation on wheatyeld is:
Y = 3,229 + 0,0423 N - 0,0001188 N2

Title: Environmental restrictions for seed - sugar beet growing
in Croatia
- Authors:
- Kristek, A.
- Kanisek, Jozo (20094)
Summary: Seed - sugar beet production in Croatia has a relatively
long tradition: it began about 70 years ago. At the beginning they were
produced seed of foreign cultivars in range of elite category, while later
they have been used domestic cultivars. Alsi, earlier it was used 2 - year
cycle including seedlings, while in the least years modern procedure has
been used (1 year production without the seedlings). In general, there are
exist a favourable environmental conditions for seed - sugar beet
production in the continental part of Croatia. However, they are possible
two types of environmental stresses as follows: freezing (factor of plant
density reduction over 80% in some years) as well as trought and heat sress
(maturity acceleration and lower degree of seed quality due to small seed
forming). In the least 25 - year period, minimal air temperature were in
ranges from - 7,8 to 26,0 oC (Weather bureau Osijek): they are considerably
below of winter tolerance of sugar beet. However, only in four years the
were found minimal temperatures below of 20oC (in total 9 days only).
Higher both plant density and largeness of plants were in connection with
higher degree of sugar beet tolerance towards winter to extent of 20%.
Also, the most resistant seedlings were those with properties as follows:
root thickness in its hypocotyle part between 0,8 and 2,6 mm, root weight
between 15 and 30 g/plant and from 8 to 12 leaves development stage.

Summary: Foreign trade is considered to be an important factor of
economic development. Since 1991 International exchange between the
Republic of Croatia and foreign countries has been characterized by a state
of war in Croatia. This means that its market potential under conditions of
peace is much greater. The Republic of Croatia has the status of a third
country in relation to the European Union, although it has ambitions to
ecome an associate member and a full member at a later stage.
Market economy in the Republic of Croatia, its favourableč position on the
foreign capital market, the privatization of the former social ownership,
restructuring and other favourable factors contribute to the increase of
its competitiveness on the European Union market.
