Summary: The article deals with tourism in towns which are both traditional generators as well as destinations of visits thanks to the concentration of attractions: sites and events. Urban tourism, particularly in historical settings, shows a number of common characteristics deriving from a culturally motivated demand and valuable man-made resources. Cultural tourism draws attention not only of tourism experts and urban planners, but also of international organizations and interdisciplinary gathe-rings. Due to the fact that towns attract masses, they are faced with serious problems of managing visitors flows. They are, furthermore, supposed to assess physical and social carrying capacities. Practical solutions in that direction are still in an experimental phase. Since urban tourism will be increasing in the years to come, an adequate tourism policy has to be adopted, particularly in the field of marketing. It should promote the product quality and a specific image of the city. Most cities stimulating the tourism sector as a major strategic option include it in their development plans as a suitable means for enhancing their artistic and cultural heritage.

What he points to in particular is the choice of destinations and the satisfaction the individual tourist derives from this. The necessity to observe permanently various trends on the tourism market is also underlined. The completely changed attitude of tourist toward destinations calls for an overall reflexion on the traditional concept. This represents one of the primary interests of Croatia who aims at a more profitable market position and the elimination of the inherited image of a low-price destination.
