Summary: European integration process is one of the most relevant factors influencing development of Coatia in international environment. Completing the internal market and establishment of European Union and European Economic Area create the need for all non-member countries to adjust their economies. With a purpose to strengthen the competitive ability of Croatia at the European market, it is necessary to monitor the policies and new measures in the European Union, to study it's implications on non-member countries, to analyse the adjustment models and find the alternative solutions of strategy towards the integrated Europe. Project has an interdisciplinary character and comprises economic, legal and political aspects, communication infrastructure and cultural as well as educational dimension. Beside the research work, the project includes development of infrastructure (European Documentation Centre) and educational activities. Research work consists of partial researches (subprojects) which include the following topics: (1) development process within the most important European integrations (theoretical approach, global aspects, factors of integration); (2) European integrations and third countries (policies toward non-member countries, especially toward Central and East European and Mediterranean countries, experiences and the strategies of adjustment); (3) position of Croatia and fields of adjustment towards European integrations (institutional links, structural adjustments, approach strategy, perspectives).

Research goals: The goal of the research project is to define the main lines of adjustments of Croatian economy and society to the changes under way in West European integrations, including economic, political, legal, technological, cultural and other development processes. These adjustments should lead to improvement of competitive ability of Croatian economy at the European Economic Area. The research is, therefore, focused on monitoring and analysing of changes resulting from European integration process, as well as on analysing the situation in non-member countries, and finally on defining the priorities of adjustments of Croatian economy and society to the EU. In relation to this, contribution of the project is the following: - scientific contribution, through interdisciplinary following the European development trends, the EU policies and defining the background for the scientifically based strategy for adjustment of Croatian economy and society to the conditions imposed by integrated Europe; - contribution in creation of necessary infrastructure in Croatia for further research and adjustment to the European integration processes. It comprises the establishment, development and improvement of functions of European Documentation Centre, links with the EU data bases and continuous flow of information toward the final users; - contribution to the creation of new high-education potentials through strengthening of international cooperation with European Studies centres, and through organization of seminars and workshops leading to the development of European Studies in Croatia.
