Summary: Four processes can be identified in the economies of the
modern world: 1. Integration processes all over the world, and especially
in Europe; 2. Disintegration processes (disintegration of the COMECON and
East-European federations); 3. Transition of state (social) ownership into
private ownership and of planned economy into market economy; 4. The search
for the position of "third countries" in the new integration processes.
The Republic of Croatia is a third country in relation to European
integration processes. Although a young democratic country with a market
oriented economic system and despite the imposed war, Croatia does not want
to be autarkical. Croatia shall find its place in European integration.
However, when market is concerned, agricultural and food products from the
Republic of Croatia will have many obstacles in the European Economic Area.
The aim of this research is to increase market penetration of food and
agricultural products into this area.
Keywords: agricultural and food products, the Republic of Croatia, European Economic Community (EEC), European Free Trade Association (EFTA), European Economic Area (EEA), market
Research goals: This research has two basic aims: 1. To conduct
market research on the European economic area; 2. To conduct research into
the competitiveness of agricultural and food products from the Republic of
Croatia on the markets of the European economic area. In other words, the
aim of this research is to assess the capability of agricultural and food
products from the Republic of Croatia to penetrate the markets of the
European economic area. Expected results The process of transformation
of socially-owned enterprises, the deregulation of the so-called agrarian
maximum, commitment to market economy and other changes in the Europen
economic area (especially after the eighth round of talks within the
framework of GATT) will make agricultural and food products from the
Republic of Croatia more competitive on the markets where European
integration processes are taking place. Activities within the framework
of the project The papers published so far belong to two categories: 1.
Theoretical papers (research on international integration processes); 2.
Empirical papers (research into conditions of management of agricultural
and food products in the Republic of Croatia). The research tema will
study standards, anti-dumping procedures, monetary unions, etc. In other
words, the research team will try to enhance the transparency of West
European markets. Other information about the project.
