Summary: The Mediterranean dvelopment concept of the Republic of Croatia is based on significant economic, demographic and management resources of its Mediterranean area. They appear to be crucial not only for the further development of coastal zone, but also for the entire economic development of Croatia. Thus, wider Mediterranean surroundings and relevant economic resources have been studied. Special attention is paid to the experiences of the most developed Mediterranean countries, such as Italy, Greece, France and Spain. Consequently, the Mediterranean development concept of the Croatian economy is to be elaborated. At the same time, measures of economic and development policies aiming to guide and stimulate, from the standpoint of economy, the most efficient development, will be suggested.

Research goals: The researches undertaken so far aimed to study the specificcharacteristics of the Mediterranean economy, resources andeconomic activities in the area. This was a necessaryprecondition for attainment of main research objective, which isto define the strategy of economic development of the Republic ofCroatia, based on the Mediterranean development concept, implyingan optimal use of coastal resources for the development of Croatian economy as a whole. The results of these research activities were presented to the public at the symposium "The Mediterranean concept of thedevelopment strategy of the Republic of Croatia", held in Split on December 8-9, 1993. Forty papers were presented and the Bookof Proceedings which was published in 1994. At the First Conference it was concluded that such a conference should become traditional. In the 1995 the Second Conference under the name "The Mediterranean Concept of the Croatian Economic Development" was organized. 41 papers from the following main areas were presented: mediterranization of Croatian economy, global development concept, development resources, economic structure of coastal zone, islands, entrepreneurship, development and environment. Taking into consideration the number of authors, institutions and towns they come from, it can be stated that this Conference is well known and widely appreciated throughout Croatia. Still, it is our intention that this Conference becomes an international one.
