Summary: In the first part,it is discussed about getting old and old
age as phenomena that get a new meaning in modern world. In this
connections new scientific discipline is being developed - gerontogogy,
that creates a new theorical basis for different form of elderly people
education. The second part describes preliminary gerontogogical practice at
the University of the third age in Zagreb, that for the last two years
functions at the Open university Zagreb.

Summary: This work introduces a new science - gerontogogy.Here, a
synthetic rewiew on general knowledge about aging and old age and the
social atitude towards the third stage of human life(which is becoming
longer and longer), is given. Education in the third stage of life as a
possibility to carry out the concept of an active old age is discussed, It
analyses the development of the university of the third age in the world
and with us. Finally, it emphasises the needs to educate gerontogogy
personnel and sketches some basic guidelines for a profile of a
gerontogogist.

Summary: One of the fundamental human rights is addressed -- the one
to education in the third life age, the old age. Third life age is compared
to the first and the second. The old age is referred to as an equal part of
the human life, with its specific qualities. Reasons for sociolization of
the old age in the contemporary society are given. Education is understood
not only as one of the elementary human rigts but as a possibility of
maintaining physical and mental fitness and vitality.

Summary: This work presents the structure and the dynamic function
of gerontogogy - a new interdisciplinary science dealing with the
optimization of education/self-education of elderly people. Being it a
synthetic educational discipline, gerontogogy describes a complex
gerontogogical cyclus in five interrelated sub-systems: ideal state as a
final point; gerontogogical communication as a system aiming at the
tranformation of elderly people to higer forms of existence; organization
of this process and, finally, evaluation aiming at the higher level of
relative regulation of the gerontogogical cyclus.

Summary: In the academic year 1992/93 a project of the University of
the Third Age was carried out in cooperation with the Open University of
Zagreb. The first experimental programmes were those for foreign language
learning, health culture and cultural mosaic presentations. This is the
fourth year that these programmes are being conducted. Approximatelz 400
elderly citizens of Zagreb are involved within 25 educational groups
working in the winter semester of academic year 1995/96. The project is
continued as action research with tendency to apply its results in other
cities.
