Summary: This research compares the intensity of personal national
identity, the attitude towards one's own nation and the familiarity with
one's own nation of the children of the second-generation Croatian citizens
living in Germany with the attitude of their peers living in the mother
country. Three measuring instruments were used in this research: the JONI
scale (Croatian acronym for Intensity of Personal National Identity) and
the SPVN scale (Croatian acronym for Attitude Towards One's Own Nation).
Both these scales were developed by dr. Ante Fulgosi. The JONI and SPVN
scales show great reliability, as expressed by the alpha coefficient, which
was 0.89 for JONI and 0.86 for SPVN. This research involved 100 children
living in the mother country and 65 children living in Germany. The subject
were 14-15 years old. Both groups of children were equilized with respect
to sex, age and the socio-economic status of their parents. The subjects
were tested in classrooms in their country and in several groups in Germany
(Catholic Missions and Croatian Immigration Clubs). Answers of
schoolchildren were graded and then a statistical evaluation and analysis
of results was done. A two-way analysis of variance was made for each
instrument with the aim to to determine statistical significance of
differences with regard to country (Croatia-Germany) and sex (male-female).
The results show that both the intensity of personal national identity and
a positive attitude towards one's own nation are greater in children living
in Germany than in those living in the mother country despite for fact that
the former know less about Croatia than the latter. Such a result shows
that both the intensintensity of personal national identity and the
favourable attitude towards one's own nation are independent of familiarity
with with the facts is weak or non-existent. The familiarity with one's own
country and people seems not to be a precondition for, and maybe not even a
component of intensity of national identity or a favourable attitude
towards one's own nation.
Keywords: intensity of personal national identity, attitude towards one's nation, familiarity with one's nation, intercultural research, national identity, the Likert scale,
Research goals: The aims of this research are to study and measure
the familiarity with one's own nation (facts from history, literature,
politics, geography, arhitecture, music, economy and culture), to measure
the attitude towards one's own nation, and to measure the intensity of
personal national identity of children of the second-generation Croatian
citizens living in Germany in relation to their peers in the mother
country. Research results give an insight into the development of national
identity under migrant conditions and enable the adoption of more efficient
education strategies. Other information about the project.
