    Summary: Even though there is no systematic and continous pedagogicaltraining of university teachers at our Universities, there havebeen some sttempts to take care of university staff development.At the University of Rijeka research was carried out with the aimof analysing the present situation and the need for training. Thereults show that the university teachers have negative attitudestowards pedagogical training. Because of several factors whichnegatively influence the realisation of pedagogical training ofuniversity teachers, changes are necessary, mostly of thelegislative, material and personnel nature.

    Summary: The author begins with the statement that the quality of teachingin Croatian universities is very low. The reason for thissituation in our country (and in the world) lies in the systemof the selection of university teachers, where the qualities of ascientific worker is given advantage over teaching ability.Speaking of the further education of university teachers it ispointed out that efforts should be made to realize excellence intheir further education in the course of which each activityshould be scrutinized, knowledge which is transferred should bethe result of the latest research, and the proposed models shouldpresent in the best way the transfer from theory into practice.

    Summary: The paper analyses the idea proposed by English authors referringto the setting up of standards and criteria for successfulteaching at university level. In this context the authors connectteaching standards with research standards, and also propose astrategy of entirely original teaching standards, independent ofthose which are commonly applied when talking about research. Inan attempt to form new criteria for the assessment of teachingthe authors propose a new approach, primarily on the basis ofAustralian and British literature, drawing of their richexperience. The proposed strategy envisages the analysis andrevision of proceedures and criteria of advancement into higherprofessional degrees.

    Summary: Problems connected with higher education in Yugoslavia are by allmeans socially caused, but the fact that pedagogic incompetenceof higher education teachers results from inadequate pedagogiceducation is not inevitable. With a few exceptions, no care istaken for staff development. Unfortunately, teachers expresstheir satisfaction with their teaching, in spite of students whoare not satisfied. The most prominent problem is the lack ofmotivation for staff development, which is closely related to thesocio-psychological milieu which is produced by thesocio-political establishment and circumstances caused by it,influencing university people as well.

    Summary: There are many reasons for unefficiency of higher educationsystem, ut teaching uneffiniency is primarily problem oftraining. It could be seen that in present conditions universityteacher's motivation for their teaching improvement is a seriousproblem. University teachers do not feel need for training, andthey do not beleive their pedagogic training to contribute tomore successful teaching. A well-known stereotype about scientistwho is at the same time automatically a good teacher as well isstill working.
