Summary: The aim of this Project was to synthesize present
theoretical andmethodological knowledge at the area of attitudes
towardsexuality in mentally retarded persons and the Burn-out syndromein
professionals working in the institutions for mentallyretarded, in order
to estimate factors determining the success ofwork in these institutions.
Further aim was to estimate the levelof social competence and the
relationship toward own sexuality ininstitutionalized adults with
moderate and severe mentalretardation. In order to fulfill aims of this
investigation, diagnostic instruments, as well as different integrative
programswill be developed. Such programs will synthesize some aspetcs
ofsocial interaction and adjustment, as well as building uppositive self
image in adults with moderate and severe mentalretardation.
Keywords: moderate and severe mental retardation, burn-out, sexuality, socialisation, coping, stress, adults, residential settings, attitudes of personnel, self-image
Research goals: This proposed project entails the complex and
methodicallyco-ordinated investigation: a) investigation of the attitudes
of personnel whose workinvolves the immediate interaction with mentally
retarded personsas pertains to the sexuality of the mentally retarded
(althoughthe attitudes vary among persons who educate and rehabilitate the
mentally retarded, many suffer from the same consequence, the"Burn-Out"
syndrome); b) development, implementation, and evaluation of the program
foreducation of personnel who work in the immediate interaction
withmentally retarded persons; c) development, implementation, and
evaluation of one complexprogram adapted to the sexual needs of persons
with mentalretardation. We anticipate that our results from this study
will enable a moresystematic investigation of the "Burn-Out" syndrome and
theattitudes toward sexuality of the mentally retarded persons.
Ourfindings will enable the creation of a compleks program forsexual
education and rehabilitation for moderately and severelyretarded persons
who live in residential settings. During thisstudy we will design reliable
techniques and instruments tomeasure the "Burn-Out" syndrome. We will
develop as well aprogram for education of personnel working in the
immediatecontact with mentally retarded persons who live in
residentialsettings. This program should be systematically implemented in
afuture study.
