Summary: THE IMAGE o a nation in the eyes of the members of other
nations, especially in the eyes of politicians, businessmen and
even"ordinary" people, greatly determines their attitudes and decisions in
connection with the corresponding nation. This influence comes afore
especially in critical and ambivalent situations, when the decisions must
be made based chiefly based on feelings and subjective evaluations in view
of lack of the objective data. In such situations the image of a nation can
become the main factor incluencing the decisions. There exist inumerable
examples which support such a hypothesis. For Croatsof special interests
are decisions in connection with the aggression undertaken by the Serbs in
most recent history. It is a matter of common knowledge that Belgrade was
systematically building a negative image of the Croats in the world,
attributing them the traits of separatists and uncooperative people, an
image of a nation without history and culture, bent to exclusiveness,
totalitarianism and genocide. The attitudes and behavior of some of the
greater nations during the agression on Croatia clearly reflect such image
of Croatia in their eyes. To this, the influence of the traditional
negative attitude toward Croats by the European left should be added,
originating with K. Marx. It is only in most recent times that such
attitudes in the West are being at least partially corrected, under the
influence of the bitter disappointment with the uncivilized and
uncooperative Serbs, and this probably only in the views of politicians.
The value of this project will come from the analisys of the dynamics
of change of a nation's image, as exemplified by Croatian image in
connection with the recent massive historical change in the world. This
colud be a contribution to the theory of formation and change of national
images, important for intercultural communication and behavior, as well as
for the practical policies in political, economic, cultural and other
fields. That is why the project has a long term character and will be
performed in a period of at least 10 years.
Keywords: Image, stereotypes, perception, communication, mass media, international relations, strategies in developing international relations, Croat history, intercultural communication
Research goals: Theoretical aims of the project encompass the
follow-up and the analysis of the dynamics of creation and change of the
image of a nation (Croatian) in specific historic conditions of the
massive change on the international scene. Such longitudinal projects do
not exist as to now in the world science, so that the knowledge on the
dynamics of image building and change is extremely scarce and has the
character of unproved hypotheses. Applied aims encompass the use of the
results in defining the image of Croatia and Croats in Europe and the rest
of the world. Such data will be welcome to the political, industrial,
touristic, cultural, sports and other functionaries who contact and
negotiate abroad in devising the general approach and specific tactis of
their communication. Other information about the project.
