Summary: This research embraces the informetric distributions as a
basicstarting point in getting insight and understanding of the threemain
components of the complex scientific system, i.e., theprocesses of
creation, transmission and the use of knowledge. Theemphasis is given to
the dynamic and probabilistic aspects, moreprecisely, to the nature of the
underlying probabilisticprocesses which govern the specific structural
features ofinformetric distributions.
Keywords: informetric distributions, dynamic processes, stochastic models, time component, structural features, distribution curve, citation analyses, information transfer
Research goals: The goal of this research is to examine the
structure of themechanism governing the observed pattern of data
distributionknown in the literature as the Bradford, Lotka and
Zipfdistributions. More recently these distributions were unifiedunder the
common term informetric distributions (Bookstein,1990). As a starting
point, following hypotheses are advanced: Hypothesis 1: The informetric
distributions are dynamic systemsevolving in time. Hypothesis 2: The
informetric distributions are governed by theprobabilistic birth-and-death
processes. Hypothesis 3: The Simon-Yule stochastic model is appropriate
tomodeling this kind of information processes. It can be expected that
these investigations will contribute tothe better understanding of the
informetric distributions as wellas to the theoretical foundation of
informetrics. The other aspect of the research is related to the
examination ofthe flow of scientific information from the
scientificallyperipheral countries. The goal is to examine the role of
domesticand international journals in the transfer of knowledge
fromCroatia. Apart from the contribution to the knowledge ofcommunication
in science, the results of such studies might behelpful to the editorial
policy in Croatia. Other information about the project.
