Summary: Applying the interdisciplinary approach to the research process it is possible to obtain quantitative and qualitative indices of the importance and influence of natural resources as well as of major economic activities in Slavonia and Baranja in the context of successful overall development of Croatia.Achieving of this objective is possible within the framework of connecting of the Danube Basin with the Adriatic Sea, which gives the project the international significance.Co-ordination of research activities resulted in realizing of the project compplexity and the need to increase the number of participants with respect to the various activities to be studied, i.e. natural resources, agriculture, food processing industry, transport, tourism, forestry, ect. Problems are particularly complex in the field of transport, in all its aspects: road,railway, river and air transport, and pipeline transport (oil, gas).The cheapest transport isthat by river, and it is possible to materialize by channelling of the Sava, Kupa and Drava rivers, and by construction of the Danube-Sava Multipurpose Canal. In addition to the aspect of natural potentials and technical solutions, the important part of the research are the economic analyses of various branches,aimed at their development through the implementation of the program of efficient connecting of the Danube basin with the Adriatic Sea.In this context,the international significance of the project must be realized.

Research goals: The objective of the research is to propose and provide the conditions for harmonious regional development the Croatia, emphasizing all essential factors of connecting the regions of Slavonia and Baranja with other parts of Croatia, in particular those gravitating towards the Adriatic Sea. The intention is to point out relevant factors determining successful development of the region, regarding provision of commodities and services, primarily food, and more effective connecting of eastern and western parts of Croatia. In addition to increased agricultural production (through higher and more stable yields of principal crops) the research is expected to give results indicating structural adjustment of both crop production and processing capacities. The results are also expected to indicate the directions and possibilities of development of integral transport between Slavonia and Baranja and other parts of Croatis. In this framework, particular importance is asigned to the implementation of the Multipurpose Danube-Sava Canal, and regulation of the Sava river as the international waterway of 4th category up to Zagreb, and of the Kupa river up to Karlovac. A part of the integral transport development is reconstuction and modernizing of the existing major and regional roads network and railways. Air transport between Osijek and the airports of the Adriatic towns should also be improved. Protection of forest vegetation as well as of all other natural resources should be implemented by timely measures in order to facilitate the development of forestry, tourism, hunting, fishing, etc. In the framework of proposed subjects and research of major economic activities, in addition to the contribution by specialized researchers, particular importance is assigned to the economic analyses with the aim to integrate overall economic development of croatia, and to connect Croatia to the countries of Central Europe.
