Summary: This research is devoted to the systematization of
development theories in the second half of 20th century. Relationships
between various development theories are analyzed, and the theoretical
value of development studies is assessed.Development processes in the
contemporary world are polycentric and transferable. They are analyzed on
the global level, following the theory of the world system. Dominant
developmental tendencies in the contemporary world are traced: the induced
development, the endogenous development, the alternative models of
development and the sustainable development. Character and limitations of
the induced development are studied in the developing countries. Elements
of endogenous development and perspectives of endogenization of
development are studied in the newly industrialized countries. Experiences
of the alternative models of development are researched through transition
processes and the international position of the ex-socialist countries,
particularly the new independent European states. Concept of sustainable
development is rooted in four main areas: ecology and environmental
protection; economic growth; demography and health; intercultural
communication and democratic social change. Development processes are no
longer initiated or controlled by particular countries, which leads to
analyses of contemporary multilateralism, regionalism and bilateralism.
The research is directed to the contemporary regional cooperation, e.g.
among the Mediterranean or Central European countries, where new types of
cooperative development may emerge. The analysis takes account of all such
tendencies, stressing the interest in the new European states, including
the study of the international position of Croatia.
Keywords: development, development theory, transformation, transition, democratization, new European states, multilateralism, regionalism, intercultural communication, international relations
Research goals: The main aim of the project is the establishment of
a systematized
insight into the contemporary development theories and
types of development dominating in the contemporary world. Development
studies are a new specialization within social sciences, and the
establishment of development studies in Croatia represents a new area of
thinking and research. The aims include an identification of elements that
might influence the development strategies and policies. The contemporary
development models are of the global character, and the comparison among
development research in different domains is necessary. One of the aims is
the spread of knowledge on different development models and possibilities.
The achieved results help a more systematized thinking about the
development of Croatia and the scientific evaluation of the global and
European environment for the transition of Croatian society. This project
enabled a full complementarity of development studies in IRMO, Zagreb and
in a number of development research institutes all over Europe ( Geneva,
Dublin, Bergen, Berlin, Paris,Budapest, Waszaw). A contribution to
development research thinking in Europe has also been achieved through the
involvement in discussions and publishing on development and transition
studies in Europe. The knowledge gained may serve as a basis for the
establishment of development and transformation studies as a specialized
field of research and education on Croatian universities, i.e. on
economic, sociological and other chairs and faculties.
