Summary: This research project covers the studies of the works and the personality of Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the bishop and the maecenas of European rank. The researchers and their assistants work on two levels: 1. the level of theoretical-thematic studies and 2. the level of archival records studies. Ad1. The level of theoretical-thematic studies of Strossmayer's contribution to the development of education, culture and art of the Croat people and Croatia in the 19th century requires from the researchers a systematic analysis and assessment of their primary tasks, that is, on the basis of the existing published research achievements and by independant research of records, sources and materials that form the "Corpus Strossmayeranum" to thoroughly investigate and present: Strossmayer's relation to national culture, to writers and literature, to artists and art; Strossmayer's efforts to revive Cyrilo-Methodian tradition and heritage, Slavenian liturgy and the use of Glagolitic books; Strossmayer's contribution, as an outstanding maecenas, to the establishment of national higher and secondary schools, cultural scientific and art institutionals, as well as to the erection of sacral buildings and the forming of world-famous art collections. Ad2. To issue the fontes ("Corpus Strossmayeranum") in units: Educational and school system. Cultural institutions. Cultural and educational organizations. Art and artists. Sacral buildings and cultural monuments. Collections. Publishing. Correspondence of the thematic corpus.

Research goals: To stimulate, set up and re-establish a well-founded scientific base (a corpus of basic source-materials) about Strossmayer- a world-famous personage of great historic vision- for the purpose of writing monographs; to write such monograph and synthetic evaluations of his historic role and contribution the importance of wich for the life of the Croatian people of his time has not yet been assessed. The need for such scientific studies in the country and abroad is urgent and the achievements will be fundamentally beneficial. The monumental work started by F. Šišić (publication of the correspondence Strossmayer-Rački, and other letters up to 1860.) JAZU/HAZU did not continue. The concentration of research potentials and the forming of the Information Centre Strossmayer at Osijek, which resulted from the work on the project, aims to be the continuation of the once started work. The wish is to continue research about Strossmayer's historical role and contribution on national and European level trough theoretical- thematic studies and archival records studies. "Corpus Strossmayer" instructs the researchers and scientific workers that Strossmayer's importance lies not only in the richness and manifoldness of his personality and his views but also in the historical documentation about him and his contemporaries, which is also manifold, and which has not been to the present day easily accessible, but scattered in archives at home and abroad, in old and foreign publications, in most cases not classified. OBJECTIVES Collecting, scientific processing and publishing of the complete historical and cultural documents concerning Strossmayer, as well as a thematically directed research and interpretation of the documentary fund will make this fund and the research achievements accessible to a great number of historians, scientific and cultural workers. First objectives are being attained: the researchers, associate workers and young assistants have been made competent as a research team for permanent tasks: fundamental research on the works and the personality of Strossmayer. "Documentary-Information Centre Strossmayer at Osijek" has been established at the Faculty of Education and is described in this project. Preparation, arrangement of authorized reports, editorial staff and the provision of financial means for the publication of a Collection of papers about J.J. Strossmayer have been in progress. This Collection is expected to show the first achievements of the fundamental research and it will contain more than 40 reports from the researchers in Croatia and abroad (Bosnia and Hercegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Slovenia, Austria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Russia). The papers were exibited on the first "INternational Symposium Josip Juraj Strossmayer", which was held in Osijek and Đakovo in 1990, under the auspices of HAZU. Theoretical-thematic studies and archival record studies, by now published or partially published within the project, will form a series of theoretically conceived volumes: Corpus Strossmayer, Educational, Cultural and Artistic Heritage.
