Summary: When contempating on practical philosophy, we initially
noticethe Greek understanding of politics as the practice or rationalwork
of free and equal citizens, who seek to achieve happinessand the greatest
good in the polis as a state or supremepolitical community. From that point
onwards, practicalphilosophy becomes identical with political philosophy.
This wasdeveloped by Aristotel in his "Nicomachean Ethics" where theunity
of ethics and politics is reflected in the concept of"philosophia
anthropina". Such a concept, in its widest sense, isidentical to political
philosophy as the science of statehood. The original idea of politics as the
rotation of government andthe obedience of actual citizens, together with
the concept ofthe state as a political community without which a person is
notan actual person, is worthwhile considering as an historicalachievement
attained by the small Greek nation and as ideas whichhave enriched world
history.

Summary: Husserl's thought that being human means existing in a
teleological sense, is confirmed by the history of European
philosophy as man's "recognition of final self-awareness",
internal meaning, and immenent teleology. In understanding man
in a teleological sense, and his ethical-political activity and
historical thought, other aspects of understanding man are not
discarded. Simalarly, teleological reasoning of nature and
"development of the organism" is not excuded. Thus, it is no
conincidence that Husserl's later treatment of the teleological
problem is reduced to understanding man, his survival, and his
history.

Title: Phenomenology of Renewal of european Humanity

Summary: Husserl's articles in the Japanese magazine The Kaizo (1923
and
1924) on the renewal of man and kulture are significant in the
renewal of Europe and the world, since they deal with "renewal in
the sense of an ethical turn around and shaping a universal
ethical culture of humanity". Ethics thus are not just basic
morals, but a practical philosophy "about all functioning
subjective awareness", its characteristics, motifs, means and
purposes, including final purposes and cultural ideas of free
consciousness.

Title: Europen federation and a "federalizing" of strengths and
characteristics
- Authors:
- Paanin, Ante (35793)

- Venturis, N.
Year: 1994
Pages: from 33 to 41
Language: njemački
Summary: The author poses the fundamental question: Is it possible
to form a European federation as a union of free and cultures from today's
multitude of national countries, and in doing so, not only preserve, but
continue to develop their cultures and historical identities? Can this be
achieved without entering a new age of abstract humanism, or some new
despotism or an oriental type of totalitarism, since political life
requires freedom and justice to counteract power monopolies. In this sense,
the European federation also must federalize according to the regional
strengths and historical identifies of members. The economics of Europe and
the world require as much unity as is necessary, but in politics as much
disunity as is possible. The problem of language policy is discussed by
author, and espouses the multiform in Europe, a opposed to absolute
hegemony of individual. This conforms to the rich European cultural
tradition, and also to a liberal democratic political authority in the
sense of Aristotle and later, Husserl.

Title: Is phenomenological-hermeneutical Continuation of Hegel's

Summary: The author poses the following question: Is it possible to
develop Hegel's philosophy in a phenomenological and
hermenautical sense?
He has shown that not only is it possible, but it has
already been accomplished in Gadamer's and in Ritter's
interpretations of Hegel's philosphy over 20 years ago. Amongst
existing explainations of Hegel's philosophy, Fink's
phenomenalogical interpretation of Hegel's "The Phenomen of the
Spirit" and Hosle's hermautical presentation of Hegel's System
are worth special mention.

Summary: Etymologically, the word Europeization suggests the shaping
ofother cultures and of the world according to the example ofEurope as a
historical outcome of Greese, Rome, and Christianity, the three foundations
without which one can understand neitherthe contemporary reality of Europe
nor its world-historical roleand task. Referring to one of the late works
by Edmund Husserl, only recently published in this country too, the author
raisesthe question whether the European spirit, its philosophy andscience,
are not "a contigent achievement of contigent humanity"like the empyrical
type of other old cultures, or whether it wasin the Greek spirit, which
represents original European humanity.

Summary: Through a comparative analyzis of the meaning of autonomy
and offreedom in antiquity and in modern times the author attempts
toelucidate some aspects of autonomy and of man's freedom - twoconcepts of
practical philosophy. He shows that the concept ofpolitical, civic freedom
has its conceptual and historical sourcein the original Greek definition of
a free citizen. The ways inwhich these relationships are transformed are
here primarlyanalyzed through the statements of J. St. Mill. The
author'sconclusion is that thinking about autonomy and contemporary
man'sfreedom has lead to a possibility of their modern implemantationonly
in a state based on law nad social consideration.

Summary: This work discusses Vic's "New Science" as a conscious
political
theology. He shows the relevance of Vic's "New Science" in the
development of alternative scientific consciousness to the
mathematically formalized New Age Science. Vic's philosophy of
history based on humanism uncovers principles and relationships
in human behaviour, interpersonal relationships, political
institutions, and historical events.
Thus, he imparts meaning, identity, justification, and
inescapability to historical knowledge and theology.

Summary: Joachim Ritter has shown the importance of theology in
modern
society whose priorities lie in developing technology and natural
sciences. Theology assumes the role of philosophy and
metaphysics, and fills in the holes in a technical world. As
technology advances, there is a greater need to develop theology
and practical philosophy for understanding tradition, history,
ethical and political activity in modern world history.

Summary: From Bacon's global science, to Husserl's phenomenological
renewal of Europe, not only is there a crisis in European
science, but in the very processes of modernization. Nations
that develop their lifestyle, historical continuity and identity
alongside of technology are most successful in this. To
encourage diversity in Croatian development, all sciences should
be considered and developed in various spheres of influence.

Summary: The role of political science is tied most closely to
political
thought and political culture in the state. Politics and science
are not exclusive; rather, they influence each other since both
are based upon presumptions which allow political freedom,
cognizant activity, free thought, science, and philosophy. The
nation is thus a political community, which is the foundation for
democratic governing and is the source of politology, political
science, and political philosophy.

Summary: On the basis of Husserl's 1923 and 1924 discussion on the
renewal of man and culture, this paper examines the possilibitz of a
philosophical renewal of the communal ethico-political life and the general
European eultural tradition under the conditions of social modernization.
The author's starting-point is Ulrich Beck's differentation between two
"periods of modernity", but he does not reduce the problem of renewal to
modernity and postmodernity. Instead, this problem is widened over the
entire history of Europe and its Greed, Roman and Christian basis for human
life as sultural life and, as Husserl would say, "from the mind". That
which Beck opted for today via the "discovery of the political", namely the
rehabilitation of practical philosophy, was already introduced as a
suitable response to this request 30 years ago, as well in Husserl's
discussions on renewal 70 years prior.

Summary: The author presents the central postulates from the latest
works by John Rawls and Michael Walzer as the most prominent
representatives of liberalism and communitarism in the contemporary
American political philosophy and points to their predecessors and
parallels in practical philosophy, from Kant and Hegel to Mill and Dewey.
Since liberals and communitarians of today do not any longer advocate a
"society" or a "community" in the traditional sense, but the
"posttraditional" liberal-democratic community in which the liberal
principles of justice and human rights can berealized, their thinking is
intresting also to those peoples who have se out to build
liberal-democratic societies outside the states of the developed West.
Naturaly, the realization of freedom and human rights depends on the
cultural tradition of each people and on the historical "lebenswelt" in
general, but also on the virtues of liberal citizens who, in a communal
political life, realize "postulates of communality comprised in liberalism"
(Walzer) and thus foster a free and good human life.

humanistic sciences. They are spiritual in as much as they diverse forms of
actualization in the world, from art and law to ethics and history,

Summary: The author presents Vico's and Hegel's theory that without
a state, there is no historical nation. According to Vico, world history is
the process in which the rulesrs of the strongest and most
ethical-politically virtuous replace one another. For Hegel, history
crystallizes into rational principles thet become the basis for customs and
the national advancement of the society. Certain nations become the
carriers of world history as they take more seriously freedoms in the
state. The author suggests that modern understanding of history should not
forget Hegel's concept of practical wisdom. For this reason also, Croatia
is not obliged to accept the international pragmatists' dictation, but
Croatia's ties to the West must be based on principles of truth and
justice.
