Summary: The research program entitled "Gjuro Arnold as an
Aesthetician in the Context of the Controversies of the Croatian 'Die
Moderne'" is conceived as an extensive and complete monograph on the
aesthetics of Arnold, connecting and juxtaposing analogous problems in
world 'respective' European and Central European aesthetics. The project
rejects up to now one-sided and fragmentary approaches, and offers a
wideranged overview of the sahping of Arnold's aesthetic views; insisting
on essential, mature theses and the introduction of many new details, the
project necessarily becomes an important re-interpretation of still
current "common", and precisely conserved, petrified wrong views on 'Die
Moderne' as an epoch and on Arnold as "its companion". Research aims at
eliminating present fallacies, prejudices and one-sided ideologization.
The monograph organizes chronologically the problematic complex, examining
the epochal, essential problems with a view to focusing on them in the
following chapters: 1. Introduction: "fin de sicle" and "la bella epoque";
2. Aesthetic Premises in the Treatise "Ethics and History"; 3. Psychology
and Aesthetics 4. Art and Nation; 5. Art and Science; 6. Faith and Art; 7.
Concluding Chapter. - The comprehensive and extensive study of the
aforemetioned themes includes, with its results, certain interpretive and
fact-oriented corrections of present historiography, which, apart from
pure aesthetic and philosophical frameworks, must also necessarily reflect
on other areas outside of aesthetics (the history of the Croatian culture
in general, the history of all the branches of art etc., and even on some
aspects of political history). This also applies to the opposite. Relevant
additions (1995) are supplemented to the second chapter with respect to
the contextualization of the problem of the relation of the understanding
of art to nineteenth century Croatian philosophy of history.
Keywords: Aesthetics, art, controversy, 'die Moderne', psychology, psychologism, emotion (feeling), beauty, form, people (nation), nation, science, positivism, ethics, history, culture, Croatian culture, ideology, philosophy of history.
Research goals: The direct and immediate goal of research was an
inivative, complete and extensive survey of the aesthetic views of Arnold,
the critical judgement of his aesthetic thoughts - without prejudices and
with complexity. The conclusion was achieved with an extensive monograph,
comprehensive and relatively detailed. In any case, this does not deal
merely with Arnold in isolation, but it was also necessary to perform a
'fitting into' of Arnold's views (which no one has done thus far) in an
historical, temporal and European context, with references to Arnold's
contemporaries and their relations, namely, his role and position in
Croatian culturalhistory, and especially in aesthetic history in
general.Given that Arnold was a univeristy professor, rector of the
University of Zagreb and later the president of "Matica Hrvatska", this
reliable and impartial explication, including acritical judgement of his
work, has direct repercussions on thenecessary re-interpretation of not
only his own views, but alsoof the survey of the epoch of Croatian 'Die
Moderne', so farrendered. In its historical context, it also has
repercussions onthe change of insight into the genesis and structure
ofphilosophical, aesthetic, cultural and artistic life in Croatiaduring
the first half of the 20th century, as well as on there-structuring of
thus far held views on the theoretical andaesthetic predecessor of the
19th century. Given that some textsare not so easily available, or it is
not known where they werepublished, they should be documentarily gathered.
Besides, the re-publishing of these text, collected in a book, should
beplanned as well. Arnold has been too often negatively evaluatedonly
through the dichotomy of "old" and "new", without othercomponents and
dimensions, mostly as being conservative. Therefore, the critical and
complete comprehension of theaesthetics of Arnold will create an entirely
new image about him,as well as Croatian philosophy, Croatian culture of
histimes and after him. The project is completed successfully, and its
results and range exceeded all expectations. Everything is puiblished in
periodicals (apart from the supplementary chapter). A total of 249 pages
(and cca 30 unpublished pages).
