Summary: The project points at the content, place and significance of the esthetical and poeticological views of Frane Petrić, a Renaissance philosopher, anti-Aristotelian, polyhistor, erudite and an expert in Classical studies. The project analyses his philosophy of art in the context of the 16th century poetics, in view of artistic creation, its origins and task, all this with regard to the basic dilemma of the Renaissance attitude toward freedom and authority, creation and the rules of imitation and toward the Platonic-Aristotelian notion of poetic tradition. The project elaborates the form and the contents of the Renaissance theories on poetry. The philosophy of language is analysed in view of Petrić's Platonic - neo-Platonic commentaries and dialogs. The fundamental categories of Renaissance esthetics are described by the examples from early Croatian poetry which includes all the basic theoretical issues of Petrić's poetics (creation, man's relation toward the beautiful, the natural and the artistic, the metaphorical, fictional and true) and the non-esthetical issues (love). The exceptional character of the speculative (philosophical, esthetical and ethical) components of Petrić's poetical judgments is analysed as well as the novelty of his entire poetics.

Keywords: Humanism, Renaissance, Baroque, Philosophy, Rhetoric, Poetics, Petrarchism, History, Creation, Imitation (Mimesis), Artistic Beauty, Natural Beauty, Love, Myth, Allegory, Metaphor, Universal, Particular

Research goals: The goal of the project is an integral analysis of Petrić's esthetical and poeticological system, accomplished within thethematic units through a series of works: 1) Research into Petrić's esthetic views, motifs and results of his comparative analysis of poetic periods, genres, works and authors; 2) The analysis of the themes, ideas and stylistic characteristics of his literary poetics and appertainance to the Western European esthetical thought of the 16th century, as well as the contemporary Croatian literature written in Croatian, Latin and Italian; 3) The analysis of Petrić's ideas concerning the philosophy of art; 4) Evaluation and establishment of the contribution, the place and significance of his theory within his general philosophical orientation, the Platonic-Aristotelian and ancient Hermetic poetic tradition. Continuing the past research into the 16th century Croatian estetical thought, the project isto examine certain aspects of the abundant and multi farious thought of one of the greatest representatives of Croatian and European philosophy, thus improving the understanding of the basic conceptions included into Petrić's philosophical and esthetical system that goes beyond his time and joins the cultural-historical treasury of ideas of the later periods. The result of the project should become a contribution to the synthetic task of the study of the Croatian philosophical and cultural heritage that is yet to be evaluated. The central issue of the project is to give a realistic description of the significance and the originality of Petrić's literary poetics.
