Summary: During his activities of delivering lectures as a profossor
of
the philosophy of history and sociology at the Faculty of
Philosophy at the Craotian Univeristy in Zagreb, Julije Makanec
was rendering lectures from the philosophy of history from April
to October in 1943. Contents of what he lectured on and prepared
at the same time for the press have remained unknown to the
public for a long time. The text is titled ŻAn Introduction to
The Philosophy of History. 13 Lectures®. His manuscript contains
256 pages all together. In this article, the author sets forth
the basic theses of the philosophy of history of Makanec
according to the manuscripts of the lectures. It is evident from
the style, manner of thinking and exlication that Makanec speaks
out of the spirit of Hegelian philosophy, which he elaborated
also in his other philosophical and jurisprudent writings. The
conception of the philosophy of history of Makanec is essentailly
determined by Hegel's conception of world history; nevertheless,
in his explication of certain questions, Makanec was leaning
toward prevailing neo-Kantian discussions and categories, on the
one hand, and toward the Diltheyian and phenomenological idea of
history, on the other.

Summary:
In his early philosophical essays ŻChildhood, Manhood, Youth and
Old Age® (ŻDjetinjstvo, muževnost, mladost i starost®) and ŻOld
Age® (ŻStarost®), Ante Starcevic discusses ethics as an original
science of life. Although Starcevic is not a Żphilosophical
scholar® who expounds his philosophy in a certain system, his
style of writing is not, however, completely without
philosophical models. Thus, for instance, Horvat pointed out in
his monograph the resemblance of Starcevic's philosophical
writings as well as his social and historical views with the
famous French philosopher Michel Montaigne. In his philosophical
essays published under the title of ŻEpistle to A Friend D.M. in
B.® (ŻPoslanica pobratimu D.M. u B.®), Starcevic discusses
philosophical questions in a narrower sense, questions that have
Żinfluence on-influent (UTOCJE-as a wordplay) life®. Just as
Socrates, who is often mentioned as a referential figure in this
context, Starcevic is not so much interested in cosmological
themes or landscapes. The central focus of his contemplation is
man, his virtues and moral obligations, thus, all that belongs to
the traditional area of ethics. Commencing from his own
experiences and understanding of social norms and views, and at
the same time ironizing his own position, Starcevic tries to
build up and express, through the intersection of the social life
of his times, his exceptional ethical standpoint, or to shape a
system of postulates of morality which have served the author of
this article as a draft for the reconstruction of his ethics.

Summary: In his teachings on the state, Croatian philosopher and
politicaltheorist Ante Starčević (1823-1869) takes as his point ofdepature
the essential principles of modern European states,which are primarily
founded in thinkers such as Locke,Montesquieu, Rousseau, Kant and others.
On the one handStarčević's idea of the state, with its customery basis
andclassical political substantiality, stands in opposition to themain
stream of 19th century political thought. In contrast to
thejudical-political theories of Jellinek, Ihering and, at a laterpoint,
Kelsen, who provided the general tone of the thencontemporary philosophy of
law and state, Starčević developed hisown concept of the state upon the
sphere of customs as humansecond nature. Given this association in modern
political sciencebetween the spheres of law and morals, politics and
customs,Starčević arrived at a concepts of state which, in the 19thcentury,
can be compared to Hegel's conception of the divinespirit on Earth.
Starčević, based on the historical andphilosophical foundations of the
state, enquired into the'metaphysical' originis of this divine and human
activity. Aboveall else, the author of this text considers Starčević's
workPolitika - an altogether Aristotelian title - wich was publishedin
1860. He also examines other theoretical treatises whichcontain Starčević's
thesis regarding the philosophy of state:Diplomacija, Zajednica, O
ustrojstvu sudstva.
