Summary: In the project "Croatian countries during civil
modernisation 1848-1918" will be researched the past and the changes in
Banal-Croatia (Province of Croatia) and Slavonia, i.e. in former Military
Border after the uniting in 1881, and Istra as well, which until 1918
belonged to austrian part of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. A significant
stress will be put on the economies, especially in agriculture changes and
in the decay of house communities (kućne zadruge). The Radić brothers
activity in croatian village will also take place in this research.
Keywords: Croatia, Slavonia, Istra, agricultural relations, hauscommunity, modernisation, improvement, urbanisation, industrialisation, demographical changes, development of cities
Research goals: This project will include Croatia, Slavonia and
Istria to a certain extent, but not Dalmatia, Dubrovnik and the Military
Borders in the Civil period that followed revolutionary changes in 1848.
Its basic purpose is to analyze the development of agricultural relations
with emphasis on the peasant question at the time of the abolition serfdom
in 1848, peasant unrest and revolts during the whole period up to 1918, the
disintegration of the extended family system after 1881 and the poltical
awakening of the village thanks to the activities of the radić brother's
party. This is followed by a detailed analysis of the development of
Croatian towns in that period, their economic and demographic change, the
influence of towns on Croatian social development as a whole, especially on
modernization and ideas of integration, inter-ethnic relations between
Croats and Serbs and the development of the Serbian middle class. Special
attention will be paid to political development, the role of the
intelligentsia, the progressive youth at the end of the 19th century and
the development of Catholicizm, especially political. The final goal is to
write several monographs and studies that will serve as the foundation for
a detailed synthesis of the whole 1848-1918 period.
