Summary: The social and political crisis, accentuated with the
culmination of the national problem in Austria-Hungary on the eve of the
World War I and toward its end, has radicalized al national and social
ideologies and forces as well, contributing significantly to the breakdown
of the Habsburg monarchy. The creation of the State of Slovenes, Croats and
Serbs followed by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes inaugurates a
substantially new historic situation, with contradictory social processes:
in the new state, set up on the unitarist Yugoslav national principle and
centralized state administration, the centuries-long continuance of the
Croatian state law (constitutional) particularity and national identity hav
been denied and consequently abolished, inclusively all thei spiritual and
material manifestations. A reaction to it was a growing sense, among
spiritual spheres and social forces, of endangered Croatianism, of its
defensive strength and of the necessity to secure unlimited and free
national progress. This evolution has been gradual but unarrestable. The
phenomenon is present by different, even antagonizing political and social
articulations; it is also mediated by numerous political and social
ideologies, parties, institutions, cultural means and arts. The subject of
this research project is the analysis of these phenomena, as well as the
research of manysided repressive system of the Serbian hegemonistic regime
and of the economic situation in the rural areas as well. Altugether, these
phenomena strongly motivate to rally the Croatian national liberation
movement.
Keywords: Croatian history, the inter-war period, the ideology of political parties, state law, the regime repression, the national identity, the intellectuals, the culture, the press, the economy, the rural areas.
Research goals: This research project is aimed to give a scientific
contribution at least on two levels: the level of subject-matter and of its
interpretation. Of course, it can be realized so far the area of this
research is covered by the activity of scientific explorers. As to the
level of interpretation, the project does not start from the recently
predominant basic point, that the creation and existence of Yugoslavia was
the only positive approach; on the subject-matter level, the research will
contribute to new problem areas. Thus, it makes possible an increasingly
complex scientific understandingof a new historical position of Croatia
during the final period of the World War I and of the dissolution of
Habsburg monarchy and, later, inside the boundaries of the Kingdom of SHS
(1918-1929). This aim will be realized through monographic research (essazs
and studies) of numerous key problems on following issues: the state law
(constitutional) status; the national and social ideologies on the eve and
during the World War I; the constitution of the new state and deprivation
of the historic identity of Croatia; the intellectual activity in the areas
of ideas and politics; the analysis of the national idea in cultural
sphere; and, particulary, a detailed analysis of economic conditions in
rural areas. These studies will give analytic estimates on the growth of
the Croatian national identity in a state based on Yugoslav unitarism and
centralism; the estimates on the nature of the society through the analysis
of the new regime repressive methods; finally, the dimensions of the social
crises and, simultaneously, new qualities in the evolution of Croatia.
