Summary: The research programme contained several fundamental
investigations as a basis for a Corpus of monuments of medieval
architecture, sculpture and certain segments of wall-painting. As the
structure of the Corpus is adapted to the geographical boundaries of the
bishoprics and archdeaconates, the research has been centred on the
regions of NW Croatia. The work included critical re-examination of all
existent written sources, i. e. archivalia and scientific literature, as
well as field-surveys and field-studies. The buildings included in the
Corpus (25 items) are presented with professional photographs and
architectural drawings and plans. The architectural scientific
documentation thus made contains ground-plans, longitudinal and
transversal cross-sections, and also the architectural drawings of other
structures or details where needed.
Research goals: The basic aim of the project is the creation of
Corpora concerning all the relevant data about medieval architecture,
mainly churches, pieces of sculpture, as well as some segments of medieval
wall-painting. The research results serve as a basis for further studies.
In creating the Corpus'structure it was necessary to adapt it to the
geographical borders of medieval bishoprics. Therefore, some specialist
studies were concieved to deal with single monuments (Zagreb Cathedral,
churches in Čazma and Remetinec), regions (Gothic church architecture in
the region of Hrvatsko zagorje), artistic developments (Early-medieval
wooden architecture), monastic orders (Templars, Franciscans, etc.). Also
the knowledge on the sites where the arhitecture dating from Roman
antiquity was antecedent or was replaced by medieval building structures,
especially churches, as well as on the relations between churches and
castles has been widened. The scientific data are part of the database
"Artistic Heritage of Croatia".
