Summary: The multidisciplinal research of the process of the settlement of the Zadar and Šibenik archipegalos including the island of Pag aims to (1) verify existing opinions/hypothesis on settlement and on factors leading to considerable oscillations of the island population, of its political status and of system of the island settlements from the prehistory to the beginning of the 20th century, and (2) create unifying data base that would serve for further scientific and developmental researches of the arcipelago. The research covers different traces/remains and aspects of human settlement analized as a part of the ecosystem throughout the history. The archeological field research includes the localities surveying (submarine localities included) with systematic small-scale transect surveying and trench-testing of chosen localities; considering the relevance of the environmental data the research embodies the geographer's fieldwork. The historical research aims to complete the existing knowledge especially on the settlement's and economically relevant sites' topography; the changes of the island society in the 19th century are to be especially studied. The ethnological research will complete the existing field data supporting the project as a whole. The toponimy research deals with the problems of the toponomastic synchrony and diachrony contributing to the better understanding of the changes of settlement and organization oh the archipelago.

Keywords: Islands of Zadar and Šibenik, island communities and environment, prehistory, archeology of Roman period, medieval history and archeology, modern history, geography, ethnology, toponomastics.

Research goals: The main goal of this project is to create a data base unifying the data on settlement, environmental interrelations, basic aspects of economical and social organization during the determined time span. The data base, completing the extant achievements, can be used for (1) the immediate needs of local development (spatial planning, evaluation of cultural monuments etc.) and (2) the further researches continuing the topics ofthis project where the main task would be the systematic fieldresearch of the areas endangered by building activities or ofmajor scientific interest. Expected results: 1. Creation and publication of detailed archeological maps including (a) hillforts, (b) tumuli, (c) major/descernible Romanperiod objects - buildings, docks, querries, (d) Early Medievalfortifications and sacral objects, (e) submarine finds. 2. Detailed analysis and publication of toponimy. 3. A study of the spatial organization of the exploatation ofislands resources during the later Middle Ages. 4. The general study of social life in the 19th century on theisland of Pag and on one of lesser island communities (Silba). 5. The comprehensive geographical study especially concerning theanthropogeographical topics that should serve as a support forfurther archeological, historical and etnological researches. 6. The etnological studies especially concerning the settlement, spatial organization and traditional economy. 7. The preparing and publishing of historical written records(complete collection of the relevant texts up to the end of the12th century).
