Summary: The project encompasses the area between the Drava, Danube and Sava rivers in the chronological framework of the 10th-13th centuries. This was the period when the mediaeval Bijelo Brdo Culture was tangibly manifested materially and spiritually, simultaneous to the early Croatian cultural group in coastal Croatia. Until recently, the research into mediaeval continental Croatia had led to a noticable retardation of Croatian research compared to Europe. Knowledge achieved through field work, documentation, and investigation, and the publication of results and presentation of papers at conferences abroad and in Croatia have affirmed this segment of Croatian Mediaeval studies. A unified absolute chronological system has been created for the Carpathian Basin region in the period of the 10th-13th centuries. In this manner, a secure relation of our archaeological studies to those of central Europe has been achieved, A dependable chronological-stratigraphic basis has been recognized for the synchronous appearance in the regions of Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, and Bosna & Herzegovina. This archaeological indicator has been confirmed at 71 sites, as shown by the results of vatious excavations in Slavonia. A database program has been designed and set up for information from Bijelo Brdo sites in Croatia, so far the only data-support oh this type in this part of central Europe. A special program contains basic archaeological documentation about mediaeval sites in continental Croatia with great practical applications. This project has resulted in original scientific works, professional articles, preliminary reposrta in scientific journals, chapters in scientific books, reviews,one oral examination for a masters degree, one mentorship for a doctorate, compleks computor program, fundamental documentation, thematic bibliographies, scientificmonographs in press, a list of mediaeval sites in continental Croatia, papers given at international archaeological conferences (Bratislava, Graz,Regensburg, Rijeka), papers at scientific archaeological conferences in Croatia. Field research has resulted in discovery of 11 new Bijelo Brdo sites, nad excavation has been carried out at 4 cemeteries and two feudal castles. The region Nuštar has been surveyed, as have parts of Drava basin of Slavonia, the Croatian Highlands (Zagorje) and the Croatian coastal region to the region in vicinity of Zadar.

Research goals: This project would be concerned with an entire series of questions crucial to the mediaeval period in Croatia (10th-13th centuries), such as those related to: the population of the bearers of the Bijelo Brdo Culture, the demographic and anthropological structure, the material and trade basis of society, craft activities (including gold-smithing), numismatics, religious remains (religious structures, church cemeteries, kinship-based cemeteries), trade routes, fortified structures, mediaeval architecture in general, micro- and macro-topography, toponomy, the importation of goods and concepts, and the appearance of regious orders. Its aims would be to form asynthesis of studies in the fields of archaeology, sociology, demography, historical anthropology, history, philology, and art history. The fundamental points of the project are: investigation of the origin and continuity of the Bijelo Brdo cultural complexon the basis of data from field research into kin-based and church oriented cemeteries, corresponding settlements, and fortified sites in the Sava-Danube-Drava region; research into mediaeval toponomy and hagionomy along with field documentation; research into the numismatic material; anthropological and sociological analyses of the Bijelo Brdo Culture; comparative study of similar material outside of Croatia; an attempt to place Croatian mediaeval archaeology at the highest possible level of scientific competency; the establishment of a uniform information system (GENESIS) for the study, storage and utilization of documentary data for the Bijelo Brdo Culture in Croatia, wich otherwise does not exist in central Europe; an investigation of the horizontal stratigraphy of large row-grave cemeteries (Vukovar, Bijelo Brdo II, Ptuj, Majs) in order to form anabsolute chronology system similar to those created for contemporaneous phenomena in central Europe; teh. publication (in scientific articles and monographs) of results from scientific research into the Bijelo Brdo Culture in Croatia; active participation in scientific conferences in Croatia and beyond (Slovakia, Austria); the preparation of a monograph about the Bijelo Brdo Culture in Croatia; the publication of a series studies about major row-grave cemeteries; the utilization and affirmation of modern methodology in field and documentation research, including interdisciplinary studies involving history, art history, ethnology, anthropology, sociology, etc.; the inclusion of project colleagues in the process of protection of archaeological zones or structures threatened by the war; inclusion in all forms of international collboration and exchange of information; participation in post-graduate mediaeval archaeology courses and the tutoring of such students within the program of the project.
