Summary: Research and verification of the archival material in
Vienna and other European metropolis, including social, political,
cultural, scientific, religious and Jesuit history of Croatia within the
system of the Central Europe till 1918.
Research goals: The aim of the investigation is research of
civilizational exchanges based on archive material in Vienna and other
centres of Central Europe, i. e. the reception and contribution of
Croatia to the cultural, religious, artistic, scientific, and
politico-diplomatic life of Central Europe from the 16th to the 20th
centuries. This project intends to achieve its aim by investigating
personal contributions of influential persons, as well as of thematic
groups and the Jesuit Order, having been active in Croatia and Central
Europe in various fields of social, cultural, educational, scientific, and
politico-diplomatic life of the time. The influence of Jesuit
lexicographers and linguists on the standardization of the Croat literary
language throughout the centuries, as well as Jesuit activities through
education, science and missions will also be the subject of these studies.
This project is part of a comprehensive research programme of the
Croatian Historical Institute in Vienna. In order to complete the
research, this Institute will also include the results of work of its
branch in Budapest which is at the foundation stage. Our opinion is that
all these results represent a considerable contribution to Croatian
historiography, especially to the knowledge of the role of the Church,
distinguished Croats, and Jesuits, in the social, cultural, religious,
scientific, and political life in Central Europe between the 16th and 20th
centuries.
