Summary: The collected works of the writer Milan Begović, essential to a complete assessment of Croatian literature at the turn of the century and between the two world wars, has never been presented in a single edition, nor has it been subjected to critical, sciebtific treatment as a whole. A scientifically prepared edition of the collected works of Milan Begović is a precondition for any complete survey of the significance and role of this writer in Croatian literature. Such an edition will provide the necessary foundation for all future assessments of the opus of this distinguished Croatian author from the aspects of literary criticism, literary theory, comparative literature, style, philology etc. The critical edition of the collected works of Milan Begović presently in progress, owing to its scientific meticulousness and numerous original methodological solutions regarding textological terms of reference, is a valuable contribution to Croatian philology, especially the subdiscipline of textology.

Research goals: The goal of this research project is to organize and prepare a collection of the entire written opus of the Croatian writer Milan Begović, using the necessary scientific methodoligies, in order to provide readers and literary experts with the authentic original texts, in a manner presenting the range and genesis of the literary creativity of this distinguished Croatian writer. This is the only way to provide the necessary preconditions for future scientific research on the writer's opus and survey the significance of Milan Begović within the body of Croatian literature and culture. By means of the scientific critical apparatus used, the proposed project will contribute significantly via the theoretical definition of Croatian textology as an important philologic scientific discipline, based on the creative opus of this distinguished Croatian writer from the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. It is necessary to emphasize that the entire artistic opus of Milan Begović, the most heavily censored writer in croatian literary history, has never been presented in a single edition, especially not in a critical edition of collected works as within the framework of this project.
