Summary: The five-year plan of onomastic research in Croatia comprises active onomastic zones where early attested onyms (proper names) are today endangered. They are of vital importance as prominent records of Croatian linguistic and cultural heritage. These regions include the islands, Kaštela, Lika, Istra, the hinterland of Zadar and Šibenik where the antroponymy of Serbian and Croatian population is being studied, Croatian areas in Podunavlje, Međimurje (anthroponymy) as well as Zagreb's modern and historical toponymy. In many of these regions the ethnic and linguistic picture was essentially different. Onomastic research will show the extent of Croatian geographic and historical presence. Published papers resulting from the study "The Settlement of Croats in Light of Place Names" point to the original symbiosis (linguistic, biological, cultural, economic, religious) between the Croats and the Latin inhabitants as well as the Romanized autochthonous population. Linguistic substitutions in toponyms (the earliest linguistic records) are most important for the history of the Croatian language and its dialects. In addition to that, we are completing work on the Supplement of retrospective onomastic bibliography and putting together a current onomastic bibliography. Through this project we are preventing important linguistic records from falling into oblivion. These records reflect the attitude of the people who created them, the linguistic reality of the period of their origin, as well as the historic and linguistic development during the thousand years of Croat existence in these territories.

Keywords: Croatia, Croatian, onomastics, toponymy, anthroponymy, name.

Research goals: The aim of the five-year onomastic research in Croatia was to gather, evaluate and elaborate onomastic materials in particularly active onomastic areas of the country. These include region of Međimurje where we are studying the origin of family names as related to the frequent migrations and political belonging of this regions to Hungary in certain periods of time. In the Dinaric Zagorje we are researching the anthroponymy of the Serbian (and Croatian) inhabitant which is endangered by rapid changes in onomastic data particularly developed in this conservative, patriarchal milieu. We are also especialy interested in the toponymy of Croats in Bačka and other parts of Podunavlje which should confirm their long historical presence in this region. We are also endeavoring to research the earliest toponymy of Zagreb as an important confirmation of its linguistic belonging on the occasion of the city's 900 anniversary. We are also recording the contemporary toponymy of Zagreb (of topographic significance). By participating in the commision charged with the naming of streets and squares we are seeking to preserve important markers of the rich historical and cultural past in the living city of today. Through the theme "The Settlement of Croats in the Light of Place Names", we are seeking to confirm presence in their present homeland at time when other monuments about their earliest settlements and geographic distribution do not exist. We are doing this by studying the earliest linguistic substitudes of inherited toponyms and also the first recorded Croat toponyms. In addition to these projects we are completing a retrospective onomastic bibliography and putting together a current onomastic bibliography.
