Summary: The aim of research is to examine the basic epistemological
and methodological presuppositions of linguistics and semiotics by means
of the analysis of the works of Presocratics, Aristotle, Stoics, Dionysius
Thrax, Cicero, Varro and Quintilian, in comparison with contemporary
linguistic and semiotic theories. In this way it will be created a basis
for the survey of the history of "ancient" linguistics and semiotics,
considered as sources of modern sciences of the same name.
Keywords: history of linguistics, history of semiotics, rhetorics, grammar, philosophy of language, theory of language, theory of sign, antiquity
Research goals: The purpose of research is to recognize the elements
of ancient philosophical, grammatical and rhetorical theories, which are
relevant to modern linguistics and semiotics, and to interpret them from
the standpoint of contemporary theories: in this way the modern theories
would be reinterpreted too. The results of the research will be manifested
on the theoretical level as a virtual transformation of the contemporary
state of knowledge on language and signs and as an examination of its
axiomatically postulated epistemological foundations. On a second level,
we shall obtain informations about the history of linguistic and semiotic
theories, as well as about the european sources of these two sciences. On
a third level, the general knowledge of ancient civilizations will be
enlarged.
