Summary: From the 12th through the 16th century(and in some places
longer) Church Slavonic functioned as the language of culture among the
Slavs. A wealth of manuscripts, printed books, inscriptions and notations
have been preserved to the present day. These include many literary works,
both translated and original as well as scholary and technical texts. Yet
despite the existence of several dictionaries or glossaries of Church
Slavonic (Vostokov, Daničić, Sreznevskij), this language has yet to receive
a complete lexicographic treatment. It was thus with good reason that an
initiative was put forward at the Fourth International Congress of Slavists
(Moscow, 1958) to begin preparation of a comprehensive Dictionary of
Church Slavonic. The Old Church Slavonic Institute in Zagreb has acted on
the Moscow iniciative and started the excerption of sources for The
Dictionary of the Croatian Redaction of Church Slavonic. The corpus of
sources was designed so that texts of all types would be represented. For
this reason it contains all Croatian Glagolitic fragments from the 13th
century and earlier (of the Apostolos, Missal, Breviary, homiliaries,
apocryphal texts and legends), the most complete (and also the oldest)
manuscripts of the Glagolitic Missal, Breviary, Ritual and Psalter, and
also certain texts taken from Glagolitic miscellanies (texts in Church
Slavonic).
Research goals: Dictionaries of this kind are result of
long-term research in the field of textology, paleography, history of
literary texts, because excerpting can be performed only after numerous
basic studies have been completed. Without such dictionaries solid research
of Croatian Glagolitic liturgical, biblical, apocryphal and other Church
Slavonic literary texts (which are very numerous in Croatia) would not be
possible. The material excerpted for this Dictionary is the basis for
studies of Croatian Church Slavonic language, on it the project "Research
of Church Slavonic language of Croatian redaction" is founded. The
"Dictionary of Church Slavonic Language of Croatian Redaction" has been
viewed by experts in Croatia and abroad as "an unique lexicographical work"
and "event significant not only for paleoslavistic studies, but for Slavic
philology in general", because this is a Dictionary of one of the later
redactions of S. Cyrill's literary language "which marked and connected
spiritual spheres of the Slavic world".
