Summary: Two works of fiction written in English by two
professionalseamen are compared with their respective translations
intoCroatian. As the practical result of this research work is to bean
English-Croatian amritime dictionary the comparison isconcentrated
exclusively on the translation od dpecializedlexical items as the basic
characteristic of the language ofseafarers. Maritime English is the natural
way of expression andcommunication of the original authors as the language
of theirprofession, whereas the translators come from
differentsurroundings. The shortcomings of their translations arising
fromculture-bound differences between author and translator arediscussed.
The conclusions arrived at are a hint for action tofill the conceptual gaps
in our bilingual dictionaries that wouldhelp the translator to confront two
cultures.

Summary:
The results of quantitatively analyzed textual corpus show the
objective advantages of the term ergolect over register: a fact not yet
sufficiently recognized in linguistics and teachingpractice. The presence
of various language registers within anergolect is correlated to the
network of skills and disciplines within the main field of activity or
profession (in thiscase marine salvage). This also indicates that the
size ofcorpus, depending of course ultimately on its purpose, isof
relative value and that smaller textual corpora are adequatefor very
specialized areas.

Summary: An English-Croatian Maritime Dictionary, the first
comprehensivedictionary of the kind, complying with the requirements
ofmodern, widely defined concept of maritime language, is to be apractical
result of the linguistic research within the project onthe "Contrastive
Lexical Study of the English and CroatianMaritime Language". This work
presents the objects and tasks aswell as the methodology and procedures
used in the project. Forthis purpose two types of corpora will be
collected: a bilingualcorpus of some 70,000 slips of English-Croatian
lexical units, keyboarded, processed and stored in a database by means
ofpurpose-designed lexicographic application programme, and,additionally, a
textual corpus containing some 5,000 ordinarypages of continuous text. The
text consisting of a representativecorpus of both written and spoken
maritime language will be inputinto the computer by means of optical
character reader, thoughallowing for some degree of manual input. The
results obtained bythe computer analysis, as well as by contrasting the two
maritimelanguages on the lexical level, will be used in the
lexicographicevaluation of the dictionary entries, and entered
subsequentlyinto the English-Croatian maritime dictionary database
forcomputer-based editing and publishing of the dictionary.

Title: Quantitative, Lexica, and Stylistic Features of the
Business Subregister in Maritime English

Summary: The textual corpus taken from maritime business
English shows certain highly specific features: relatively low hapax
-token ratio, lower type-token ratio and noticeably lower lexical
density than some registers (however, there is also a slight difference
in lexical density between business and legal subregister in the
analyzed corpus). Such results once again show that business English
is actually a mixed register, being somewhat simpler than
certain other registers. The results also show definite
interrelations between quantitative features of the text and its
stylistic identity.

Summary: Anglicisms in the Croatian maritime language are the result
of
frequent and intense maritime contacts between English and
Croatian seamen. The English element in the Croatian maritime
language is studied on the phonological, morphological and
semantic level, with particular emphasis on the process of
linguistic borrowing and the adaptation of the English words in
the Croatian maritime language.

Summary: Language contacts are one of the major factors
affecting linguistic borrowing. The knowledge of the principles of these
contacts and of the lexical systems and sets in a technically-marked
vocabulary is to contribute to a substantiated evaluation of the loan-words
in the Croatian maritime terminology. It explains the nature of their
appearance and at the same time helps determining the similarities and
differences of the technically-marked lexical systems. The present work
deals with such issues as applied to a specific portion of the terminology
used in maritime law.

Title: Foreign loan-words in German language of the international
maritime transport and forwarding
- Authors:

Publisher: Društvo za proučavanje i unapređivanje pomorstva Republike Hrvatske
ISBN: 0554-6397
Year: 1994
Pages: from 429 to 448
Number of references: 17
Language: hrvatski
Summary: The paper discussed a quantitative analysis of foreign
loan-words, especially English, in a German text corpus taken from
international transportation and forwarding. The corpus, consisting of two
sub corpora, was processed: subcorpus SC1 manually and subcorpus SC2
computationally. Analysis of SC1 showed that the ratio of English
loan-words varies, depending on the language subregister, and the ratio of
remaining foreign loans is quite stable. Analysis of SC2 was therefore
limited to English loans. Correlation of the individual ratios with the
text topic showed that there is an essential difference between the
function of English loan-words and the function of remaining foreign
loans. Whereas the function of the latter is clearly informative, the
function of the former tends to be more social and stylistic.

Summary: In the compilation of the English-Croatian Maritime
Dictionary the stylistic category of nostromisms appears on the Croatian
side. This kind of lexis has no counterpart in the English language, but
can often be a means of rendering the English jargon in seafarers into
Croatian in the most plausible way.

Summary: The selection of dictionary entries and the arrangement of
theentry article present some of the principal issues in
bilinguallexicography. Some of these, including solutins for the same,
areexemplified by retrieving evidence from a specially designedcorpus for
the English-Croatian Maritime Dictionary. Theinclusion of multi-word
lexemes in a dictionary of this kind isstrongly advocated. The article also
highlights the difficultiesin defining the criteria and methods for
selecting, arranging andpresenting translational equivalents. A wide use of
explanationsand comments is suggested, especially in cases of the
culturallymarked lexical units. Lexicalisation of conceptual fields is
alsoindicated as a useful tool in a technical bilingual dictionary.

Summary: On Some Linguistic Features of the Lexicographic Definition
Initially the term lexicographic definition is studied. The basic issues of
the lexicographic definition are discussed with particular reference to the
defining vocabulary. Defining vocabulary has been studied on a sample of
some thirty lexical entries retrieved from British and American
dictionaries and contrasted with the same for their counterparts in the
Croatian monolingual dictionaries. On the basis of a computer-compiled
corpus of definition texts, frequencies and lexical context have been
determined for the most frequent words in the defining vocabulary.

Summary: Management, as a social group, is in the unique position
to affect and maintain its image through verbal means. It is,
therefore, perfectly plausible that the social status of the
individual and the social group in management should dictate a
specific use of language. Linguistic literature, as indeed literature
on management, international business and marketing, identifies
management ergolect with business language. True enough, the
business language and the management ergolect overlap in a small segment
(the lexical layer of business transaction). The investigation into
lexical, semantic and stylistic features of management ergolect proved
its separate identity. A short review of some newer Croatian
editions in management and organisation show that Croatian authors
are intensively aware of the significance of communication and
language in management, which indicates the necessity of a
detailed analysis of Croatian management ergolect and the
correlation of its use with the social status of the individual
and the group.
