Summary: On the basis of the contrastive analysis of maritime
English and maritime Croatian and their respective vocabularies an
English-Croatian maritime dictionary will be compiled as a practical result
of this study. The project also aims at unifying and standardizing the
Croatian maritime terminology. The contrastive analysis is to be carried
out on a representative corpus determined by the definition of the concept
of "maritime language". The corpus, to be fed into computer by scanning
texts and by hand, will be analyzed by methods of corpus linguistics, and
the lexical database thus obtained will be combined with the lexicographic
material obtained from existing bilingual dictionaries in the maritime
industry and sea-related studies. The results of the above analysis will be
used in determining the selection of lexical entries and in their
lexicographic evaluation and editing. They will also be used for further
semantic, lexicological and lexicographic studies of the English and
Croatian maritime languages.
Research goals: The goal of the project is to study and to contrast
the semantic and communicative features of maritime English as the
source-language and maritime Croatian as the target-language. By achieving
a higher degree of disambiguation of maritime vocabulary its is hoped that
the communicative competency of mariners will be increased, thus
contributing to the safety of navigation. Other information about the project.
