Summary: The project is conceived as an exploration of two
terms/phenomena in 20th-century culture and literature: a) intertextuality
(the interrelationship of a text with other texts) and b)
autoreferentiality (the interrelationship of a text with itself).

Research goals: The project has gathered together the collaborators
of theInstitute of Literary Studies at the Faculty of
Philosophy,University of Zagreb, and the Institure for Literature of
theHungarian Academy of Arts and Sciences in a collaboration thathas been
going on for twenty years. The aim of the project is towrite studies on
the phenomena of intertextuality andautoreferentiality in 20th-century
culture and literature. Twoscholarly gathertings have been held: one in
Opatija in October1990, and one in Pecuh, in October 1993. The revised
papers fromthis gathering have been published in two editions:
thecollection of papers entitled INTERTEXTUALITY ANDAUTOREFERENTIALI
(Institute of Literary Studies, 1991) and in theperiodical NEOHELICON (XX
1, 1993). Work on the project has a)strengthened the traditional
cooperation between the Hungarianand Croatian colleagues and opened up new
possibilities(including colleagues from the University in Konstanz in
ourfuture work), b) provided the Croatian public with an insightinto the
latest literary-historical research, and c) a widerresponse is expected in
Europe (papers published in foreignlanguages in a special issue of the
magazine "Neohelicon)". The following papers were published in the

Autoreferentiality) 8. Pavao Pavlicic: The Purpose of Autoreferentiality 9.
Kresimir Nemec: Autoreferentiality and Self-Awareness 10. Aleksandar
Flaker: Tertium Comparationis: Pasternak, LjuboBabic, Tintoretto 11.
Dubravka Oraic-Tolic: Autoreferentiality as Metatext andOntotext The
documentary monograph HRVATSKO RATNO PISMO 1991-92/CROATIANWAR WRITING
1991/92 was compiled, edited and published within the scope of this
project as well as the project 6-03-074. The book introduced and explained
the term "Croatian war writing" as a form of autoreferentiality - the
self-explanation of a culture exposed to war.
