Summary: The project is conceived as an exploration of two terms/phenomena in 20th-century culture and literature: a) intertextuality (the interrelationship of a text with other texts) and b) autoreferentiality (the interrelationship of a text with itself).

Keywords: intertextuality, autoreferentiality,Modernism, the Avant-Garde, postmodernism

Research goals: The project has gathered together the collaborators of theInstitute of Literary Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy,University of Zagreb, and the Institure for Literature of theHungarian Academy of Arts and Sciences in a collaboration thathas been going on for twenty years. The aim of the project is towrite studies on the phenomena of intertextuality andautoreferentiality in 20th-century culture and literature. Twoscholarly gathertings have been held: one in Opatija in October1990, and one in Pecuh, in October 1993. The revised papers fromthis gathering have been published in two editions: thecollection of papers entitled INTERTEXTUALITY ANDAUTOREFERENTIALI (Institute of Literary Studies, 1991) and in theperiodical NEOHELICON (XX 1, 1993).
