Summary: The article deals with the problem of modal verbs which
inEnglish, according to some linguists, are treated as a separategroup; on
the other hand there are others who support the thesisthat modals are not
different from ordinary verbs. Recentcontrastive investigations have shown
that there is a certainnumber of syntactico-semantic features common to all
of theseverbs. The author discussed the relation between the full
anddefective forms of some modals and their meaning, with a moredetailed
description of the Croatian verb 'morati'.
Keywords: modal verbs, syntactico-semantic features, full and defective forms of modals
