Summary: The lexical inventory of the urban vernacular of the town
ofKorčula will be analysed on the material of the corpus collectedby
systematic fieldwork carried out by native speakers. Theresults of that
analysis will be presented in a dictionaryincluding, also, the elements of
grammar, style and manyauthentic examples. The process of lexical units
becomingobsolete is also analysed on the basis of comparative study ofthe
lexis used by several generations.
Research goals: The aim of the research is to describe the lexis of
the given urban community and compile the dictionary of its vernacular. The
results of the project will contribute directly to the description of
Čakavian dialects and their varieties in the coastal area of the Adriatic
and, consequently, help fill out the general picture of the Croatian and
South Slavic dialectal system. The research, as envisaged, has various
linguistic, sociolinguistic, contact linguistic, historical linguistic, and
anthropological implications, i.e., all these disciplines could draw upon
such a dictionary from their respective points of view. The comparison of
the data from an urban vernacular dictionary (in our case the vocabulary of
the spoken language of the town of Korčula) with the lexical material of
other rural dialects will, presumably, yield interesting results showing
variations among vocabularies of diverse social groups. There are many
indications for the existence of such a phenomenon but it has to be
substantiated by more systematic evidence. The corpus of local vernacular
is being compiled. It will consist of authentic sentences exemplifying
particular lexical units and will provide aboudant grammatical and
stylistic, as well as cultural anthropological data. Other information about the project.
