Summary: Understanding is viewed as an important component of
communication and part of linguistic performance. A number of communicative
strategies accessing available knowledge play an important role in cases
when attempts are made to understand unknown linguistic variables. These
issues are discussed in an analysis of non-native, but highly competent
student's of English performance in understanding non-standard English
varieties.
