Summary: The aim of the project was to describe standard and
non-standardvarieties of English around the world. The description relies
oncontrasting non-standard varieties with the standard ones,
payingattention to both national and local standards, urban and
ruraldialects. Included are also the most important 'new Englishes'.The
description is carried through on all levels of language,with particular
consideration of their social roles within theEnglish speaking community
and world wide. Investigation furthercovers the intelligibility and
acceptability of English varietiesamong Croatian learners and their
applicability in foreignlanguage teaching. On the other hand their
communication inEnglish is also evaluated.
Research goals: a) A description of standard and non-standard
varieties of English and their roles in society. b) Evaluation of their
place in international communication and in the process of learning English
