The Franciscans, conforming to the rules of their order "Do not only live foryourself but be useful to others", occupied themselves not onlywith the spiritual welfare of their flock but also with theirphysical welfare so as to alleviate their suffering here onearth. As there were no civilian hospitals, hospices wereestablished and these were mainly charitable institutions, someof which maintained a pharmacy within their organisation.
