Summary: Unit I: Putti's pictorial dictionary is unique in european
and probably in a larger cultural sphere. Since it grew out of the Croatian
ground, we may consider it also on an equal footing as a part of Croatian
cultural heritage, on which in a pictorial part considerably relies on,
although it was written in italian language.
Unit II: The glossaries should be the exxential
expedients for a proper interpretation of the medieval and subsequent
documents (notarial written documents, municipal statutes, testaments,
contracts etc.) drawn up mainly in Dalmatian towns. Since in the course of
these centuries in the written usage prevaled Latin and Italian language,
but in oral Croatian one, it was important to establish interactions and
semantics shifts, by means of diacronic and areal method. Enlightening of
these linguistic problems enables us to have better insight in Dalmatian
every day life, in a way used by Braudel's school, so the results of the
researches should show the proportion of the existence on the Croatian
coast of Latin, Italian and Croatian influence in every day life, as by
terminological so by legal and ethnologic standpoint.
Keywords: Word, lexeme, drawing, headword, table, abstract concept, parts of speech, dictionary, pictorial dictionary, intuition, lexicography, gloss, semantics.
Research goals: Regarding the pictorial dictionary, the aim is to
research the author's biography and all the circumstances in which this
work had origin, and consequently for the first time publish it in a
critical edition, presenting it to the world public. Since it is a very
expencive editorial undertaking, the most eminent Italian lexicograph
publishing house "Accademia della Crusca" will be the publisher of this
dictionary, about what has already been obtained an agreement. It is also
expected to publish a separate book about this dictionary, richly
illustrated with examples of drawings and incorporating all data about the
author, the dictionary and the author's time. The program also includes a
series of articles about the same dictionary. The aim of
glossaries is to select a specialized lexical stock from the documents
(notarial written documents, municipal statutes, testaments, contracts
etc.), to treat it etymologically, to find out all Croatian equivalents of
that period (if they exist), explaning the meaning by Croatian contemporary
language. The expected contribution is to create manuals, which willhelp the
researches of other professions to be able to translate documents - and
what lacks in our lexicography - whereas the semantic shifts grew already
in such size that a great number of text became difficult to understand.
According to the bybliography of Croatian dictionaries (B.Franolić, A
Bibliography of Croatian Dictionaries, N.E.L., Paris 1985) it results that
in the former Croatian lexicography do not exist specialized dictionaries
of such impostation.
