Summary: Within the scope of wider reserach and publishing of the Croatian political, cultural and political history, the registering, research and publishing the on the life, political, cultural and artistic acting of the Croatia's most prominent artist, Ivan Meštrović, is of particular importance. There have been published several thousand papers, criticisms, reports and other writings on Ivan Meštrović. Still, no comprehensive scientific analythical monograph has been written on him and his art so far. Most of the monographs published (4 of them by myself) have been of rather popular -illustrative than scientific-analythical importance. The aim of the project is to provide, within the scopes of the history of Croatian art and culture, an as complete as possible scientific treatment of the Meštrović's omniscent work, especially in the field of sculpture, as well as to revaluate his vast opus. Meštrović being exceptionally fruitful not in the field of Croatian sculpture only, but in the field of wider cultural, social and political life, besides the fields of architecture, literature, etc., a comprehensive review of his work in the country and abroad is very voluminous and subject to previous registration and review of over ten thousand written records of his life and work, which makes the work on the topic even longer. The project colects, processes and critically valuates all the printed and the archive materials on Meštrović, his artistic works, political, literary and other writings, and especially his artistic opus that includes about 2,000 sculptures, reliefs, paintings, architectural works and this many more drawings. Oral and written testimonies on his life and work by the artist's temporaries are being registrated and verified. The project pays particular attention to collecting the large critical, art-history and informative literature on Meštrović, but also on the people from his personal, political, cultural and political environment, his family, political and social circumstances of his environment in particular periods of his life and work. The Meštrović's visual-arts and literal works, especially the sculptures, but also paintings (and drawings) and architecture, are being analyzed and artistically valued. The relationship between such works and the contemporary ideas and works in Croatia, Europe and America are being established. Special attention is paid to the criticisms of his acting in particular periods and environments, in the wide range from divination to underestimation.

Research goals: The aim is to colect, as complete as possible, materials on the life and work of Ivan Meštrović, his epoque and his environment, and to publish everything that is of importance for the study and presentation of his work, especially the sculpture. To register his works, especially the sculptures, as complete as possible and to make a catalogue thereof. To register and make available to everyone dealing with Meštrović and his art in the future an as complete as possible bibliography of books, papers and newspaper articles on him and his works. To make a catalogue of individual and collective exhibitions, in the country and abroad, where he was present. To present by photographs, as complete as possible, his life and work, especially the sculptures, in public and private collections, in the country and abroad. This project will be followed by further art criticisms and opinions on Meštrović, both nationally and abroad, but his life and works factography published here will be an unavoidable base for any further treating of his political, cultural and, particularly, artistic activity.
