Summary: The purpose of the doctoral dissertation was to survey
Marian iconography in paintings dedicated to the Virgin produced bertween
the 15th and 18th century and located in an area extending from Rab to Boka
Kotorska. The iconographic schems of these Marian paintings are divided
into a number of groups: those which derive from early Christian times and
Byzantine icongraphy and schemes which arose in the period extending from
the late middle ages to the baroque. On account of their wide distribution
in Dalmatia particular attention was devoted to representation of the
nursing Virgin, Our Lady the Rosary, Our Lady of Carmen and Our Lady of
Loreta. Among schemes connected with events in the life of the Virgin Mary,
a special place was accorded to representations of the Immaculate
Conception, Annunciation, Christ's birth, Christ's passion and death, an
the Ascension. The various schemes which constitute the Marian iconography
in Dalmatian painting are unfortunetly variations or replicas of works by
well-known artists.
