Summary: In this book the author analyze current problems of identity from the aspects of modern theories of social development, ethnic identity and language, as one of the crucial factors of ethnic identity. The author also deals with ethnic identity as one of the factors of organized-communal life in a community. It includes many elements but basically rests on a feeling of belonging and loyalty to a certain community. At the same time it implies a variety of cultural elements representing the individual expressions of cultural patterns by community members. This research established that the respondents - Croats in Hungary - have a high level of ethnic identity, and also the presence of manifold identity (so called: nested identity). A sence of togetherness with the mother country Croatia is also felt.

Summary: The author proposes to interpret the rich corpus of Croatianhistorical ethnographic data concerning the so called "Eastercycle of customs" in the light of one of the most widelyexploited theories in the study of ritual - the theory of rite depassage. The first problem encountered by the author is that theanthropological literature has virutally no studies of Easterrituals. The theoretical bases for the study are derived from thework of A. van Gennep and J. Cazeneuve. Lenten and Easter ritualsowe their transitional characteristics both to theirpre-Christian elements and to Crhistian rituals which overlaidthem.

Summary: Studying domestic folk art, inaugurated in th 1930s is still inits infancy. This assertion is born out by considering the motifof swastika, studied by Milovan Gavazzi in 1929 and 1930.Gavazzi's model of scientific study (applied in the analysis ofswastika on easter eggs), in thune with the then prevallingcultural history approach, has been reproduced and perpetuated bynumerous domestic ethnologists. In the situation in which the history of social sciencesrecognizes theoretically and methodologically different researchtrends, Gavazzi's tenets are necessarily bound to criticism. From the aspect of contemporary science, the strongest argumentfor disputing former interpretations of folk art is their neglectof the context of folk art manifestations.

Summary: The increase of folk piety, the question of both the national character of Christmas rituals and contemporary controversies on individual Christmas customs - the re-naming of the Christmas gift-giver, shooting on Christmas and New Year's Eve - are interpreted as features of mentality, but also as indicators of political processes in contemporary post-socialist transition in the Croatian fashion. The component of power relations is introduced into the ethnological discourse on Christmas.

Summary: Although some of the critiques stated that Croatian ethnologists, when writting in the first half of the 20th century did not introduce theoretical discourse in their studies, the paper shows that some of the studies by Mirko Kus-Nikolajev include theoretical considerations on ethnographic data. The differentiation between a historical and "ahistorical" (typological) using of the notion of "baroque", proposed by Heinrich Woelfflin, will help identity some other baroque features and, also, discuss the justifiableness in using the notion of a style, including the possibillities of interpretation.

Summary: This paper reviews folk customs in winter among Croats in Ilokaand surrounding villages, the relation between ethnic identityand folk customs as symbols of that identity. The author claimsthat research results correlate with two levels of time: thepast, in which it is evident that customs and some of theirelements are related to the rest of the Croatian ethnic region, and in a broader sense to the European cultural context. Theother level is the present in which the examinees expressed apositive attitude towards their cultural heritage. The majorityof these Croats has been desplaced and exiled from their homesduring the aggression on Croatia in 1991/1992.

Title: To the dance event: theories and methods in dance research

    Authors:
    Zebec, Tvrtko (180476)
    Language: slovenski
Summary: The author discusses the differences between ethnochoreology, dance anthropology and dance ethnology. He relates the ethnochoreological approach to the European tradition of studying dance structure, and the anthropological approach to the American tradition of studying dance context and understanding society through analyzing movement systems. The notion of the opposition between the European and the American perspectives on dance is based upon several generalisations. The general trend among the European scholars is to study dance cultures different from their own. Many scholars, represent both the anthropological and the choreological "schools" have argued for an integrative perspective on dance research. The advantages of the American dance ethnology are taken into account. The study of dance events seems to provide the best opportunity for the researcher to understand dance as a form of human behavior and as a complex cultural phenomenon. Focus and emphasis may shift depending on the aim of the study - from micro to macro level of the dance event or in the opposite way.

Title: Siebenschritt - a transformation of the dance among the Croats

    Authors:
    Zebec, Tvrtko (180476)
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The Siebenschritt is a dance of the middleeuropean provenance, from German speaking countries. A number of Croatian dances noted in the western, continental and southern mediteranian region, are just different variants of the Siebenschritt, which penetrate the Croatian towns and villages in the late 19th century. That dance often assumes the names of the similar couple dances - šotić, polka, vekslin polka. Author finds out that the example of the Siebenschritt offers the possibility to establish two levels of transformation. The first level, modification of the dance according to the style of dancing usual in the respective community, and the second, authorial liberty of the choreographer for the stage performance of the Siebenschritt.

Title: Between myth and history: displaced and refugee children's life histories

    Authors:
    Povrzanović, Maja (90204)
    Language: engleski
Summary: The article is based on the analysis of 45 life histories written in March 1994 by 11 to 14-year old displaced and refugee children in Croatia. They have a tripartite structure: pre-war times are recognized as one's own childhood that has been interrupted by the war. The problems arising from life in exile are interpreted as the problems of growing up. From the standpoint of the writing subject, such type of interpretation (re)establishes the desired continuity of a life history. Discourse analysis, however, shows decisive difference between the conceptual framing of the idealized "ecological" experience of the pre-war times, and the ways events are presented in the parts on the later war- and exile-experiences. The former mythlike language is namely "contaminated" by the attempt historically to designate single events.
