Summary: The project assumes that rituals have been an important part of Croatian folk culture in the past and in contemporary everyday life of various social strata and ethnic groups. Folk culture and rituals are studied multidisciplinary as symbols and loci of identity and as foci of artistic creation. Since there is not a contemporary synthesis or a review of Croatian folk rituals, the project undertakes preliminary preparations towards writing monographs on particular rituals and towards a future modern synthesis of Croatian folk rituals. Light will be cast upon certain phenomena of traditional culture as well as upon actual phenomena of our contemporary urban or rural culture (folk piety, wedding ritual, political ritual, folk representation of witchcraft), all of which are phenomena that ethnology and folklore studies can interprete in a relevant way. We shall continue the work on the archive of rituals, or more broadly of Croatian folk culture and art, with an aim of founding a basic documentation on these subjects. Within this domain, a computorized data base will be established which will at the same time contribute to the protection of the unique information on folk culture. In this way the most essential scientific contribution will be achieved: interpretation of contemporary folk culture and rituals both in their national and historical cultural context, and in intercultural contacts.

Research goals: The aim of this project is twofold: 1. it deals with theoretical issues needed as a basis of a scientific treatment of Croatian customs and rituals in 20th century, as well as with interpretations of their meanings in the national culture; 2. it concerns a wider context of recent cultural phenomena, i.e. of the elements of contemporary urban and rural everyday practices. Ad 1. Regarding the fact that there is no ethnological synthesis on Croatian customs and rituals (except the one by M. Gavazzi published in 1939), the aim of this project is to finish the preparations for a modern ethnological presentation in the form of a series of monographies, or in the form of a synthetical overwiev or an encyclopaedia of customs and rituals. Ad 2. It is neccessary to investigate popular culture, i.e. the culture of everyday life in a wider context, as well as to pay special attention to several topics that have been neglected, such as popular piety, political ritual and contemporary folk art. NOTE: Regarding the war imposed to Croatia and the suffering of Croatia citizens, the main researcher and the participants of this project agreed to add a new aim: on the one hand, we decided to do ethnological research in wartime-everyday life, in order to document and interpret fear, death and survival strategies in the war, as well as the life of displaced pesons in Croatia. On the other hand, we decided to present the data on folk culture and folklore of devastated and until recently occupied Croatian regions, collected in the frame of our Institute's project before the war.
