Summary: The main problems of educational reforms in post
communistcountries are identified, by use of an interactive model
ofeducation and developmental dimensions of society. The relationof
implicit and explicit educational goals and characteristics ofa society is
reviewed, and a typology of the relations betweenpolitical and economic
state regulation on the one syde, and thestructure of educational goals on
the other is suggested. It isestablished that the so called "socialist
pedagogy" decreases thetransparency of educational goals and obstructs a
systemsanalysis of education. The role of education in the transitionpolicy
of post communist countries is discussed, with a specialemphasis on
economic and political reforms, and ideologicalchanges. It is concluded
that the Europeanization of education inEastern European countries will be
impeded because of thestalemate in the transormation of ownership and
politicalmodernization, as well as ideological conservatism. Theeducational
effects of European cooperation in the economicrecovery of the East are to
be expected in the area ofstandardization and unification of education,
while the effectsin the internalization of modern values and attitudes
areexpected to be less prominent.
