Summary: The universal goal of education is the "contribution todevelopment". Development is a multidimensional economic, social(political), cultural and ecological change contributing to abetter quality of life. The quality of life is a complex, synthetic experience of satisfaction/dissatisfaction of anindividual with his life resulting from the permanent evaluationand reevaluation of his achievement in meeting and fulfilling hisneeds. Therefore, the quality of life is determined both byobjective factros, that is the natural and social environment, and by psychophysical characteristics of the individual. Thequality of life as a psychological category can only be examinedon basis of one person's subjective evaluation of satisfaction, because objective circumstances are subjectively evaluateddepending on one's wishes, striving and experience. One of the factors contributing to satisfaction with life iseducation. Education is a means by which economic and socialpromotion and the realization of personality are achieved.Education is not solely a factor of the quality of life, it isalso a mechanism through which other factors contributing to thequality of life are observed in their ful importance (ecologicaleducation, human rights, etc.). Therefore, education constitutesthe main infrastructural element of the quality of life. The paper surveys the possible contribution of the level ofeducation, types of educational programmes, methods andorganization of education to the quality of life. It alsoinvestigates interactions between education and other factors ofthe quality of life, especially in terms of the significance ofcognitive and personality characteristics of an individual.

Summary: The relationship is examined between innovative behaviour ofemployed persons and the type and quality of their education. Thecontribution of education to the innovative behaviour on the jobis studied on the basis of a random sample of innovators fromthree large firms with a highly developed innovative activity. The data were obtained by a survey, and the correlations betweenvariables were determined by means of integral an progressivemultiple regression analysis. The results obtained indicate adirect effect of the quality of education on the quality ofinnovative production., i. e. lower rank innovation is found alsoamong respondents with lower education, while innovation of ahigher value seems to be the exclusive domain of highly educatedinnovators.

Summary: A random sample of 143 subjects was used in an empiricalstudy of the quality of life. Information was collected on whatthe respondents most frequently understood as the quality oflife. They were asked what they thought of first when they heardthis expression; what was in their opinion the most importantelement of the quality of life; and, lastly they were asked toassess te quality of their own lives. At the mention of the expression "quality of life", thesubjects most frequently thought of the material aspects of life,of the feeling of gratification, and of the social aspects oflife; they also consider that economic and social conditions andpersonality traits represent the main factors of the quality oflife. These findigs were analyzed as a function of sex, age andeducation. The assessed quality of life was analyzed also withregard to the respondents' economic standard. The conclusion is that the quality of life invariably dependson the living conditions at the time of the survey and, further, that material aspects are not an indicator but necessaryprerequisite of the quality of life, as has been borne out by thepresent study.

Title: The Quality of Life as the Objective of Education

    Authors:
    Pastuović, Nikola (94256)
    Journal: Th‚lŠme
    Number: 1
    ISSN: 1019-7591

    Pages: from 1 to 18
    Number of references: 46
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The article analyses educational objectives from the point ofview of different educological disciplines. The structure of theteleological system of education is explained as well as the wayit is affected by the political, economic and cultural context.Particular stress is laid on the problem of the possible conflictbetween economic, political and psychological (selfactualizing)educational aims. The author tests the teleological solution, according to which the main objective of various types ofeducation is the "quality of life", conceptualized assatisfaction with life, as it depends on the degree to which thebasic (existential), social and selfactualizing needs have been satisfied. The objective factors of the quality of life are subjectivelyweighted with regard to the value system, aspiration level andvarious personality traits. Education can contribute to thequality of life by affecting the capability of satisfying theexistential and social needs, and by directly influencing thepersonal development of the individual. The optimal set ofconditions, where the contribution of education to the quality oflife is the highest, may be identified by means of multivariate(and not bivariate) empirical studies of the interaction betweeneducation and the quality of life within the system of objective(situational), cognitive an other personal characteristics.

    Language: hrvatski
Summary: A study was carried out on a sample of 535 adult subjects, attending different types of educational courses in order toestablish the relationship between the subjects' educationalbackground and their cognitive and emotional evaluation of theirown attainments. A strong correlation was founded to existbetween the subjects' educational level and their cognitiveevaluation of the attainments in 7 (out of 22) of the major lifeobjectives, and there was also a correlation between educationand the satisfaction with the attainment of 6 life objectives. There was no significant correlation between the subjects'educational backgrounds and their general satisfaction in life. The mutual relationship between education and the cognitiveevaluation is negative rather than positive (of the 7 importantcorrelations 5 were negative). The subjects with a highereducation have a lower opinion regarding their attainments thanthose with a lower or secondary education, probably because oftheir higher expectations. The correlation between educationbackground and affective evaluation is less significant and ismainly a positive one (of the 6 important correlations, 4 werepositive). The results obtained support the view that is possible to distinguish between the cognitive and affective evaluation oflife. The fact that one's educational background is related withone's perception of success and satisfaction in a small number offields is in keeping with the results of the studies according towhich education (social clasification variables) accounts for thelittle variance in a person's satisfaction with life.

Summary: The concept of sustainable development has an assumption notonly the usage of resources and protection of environment butalso a kind of reconceptualisation of the development itself. Thedevelopment is by definition the change or actualisation of thepotential of the entity in development. To satisfy the man'sneeds it need not be positive, in fact, it can be negative aswell. That is why the development should be interpreted as theincrease in satisfying of the man's needs, i.e. improvement ofthe quality of life. As the needs are structured as a hierarchical system (basicor economic, social and selfactualising needs), the developmentis not onedimensional but multidimensional phenomenon.Psychological research of the satisfaction with the ways ofliving, as the measure of its quality, shows that thesatisfaction is not a bipolar phenomenon, and that satisfactionand dissatisfaction are two independent variables caused bydifferent factors. Satisfaction, i.e. quality of living, dependson the realisation of the social and selfactualizing motifs, andnot the existential ones, which are the necessary condition forthe experiencing of higher needs. The social development consistsof the realisation of the conditions for satisfying all, not onlybasic man's needs. If the conditions for satisfying higher motifsof the inhabitants are not insured, the existential needs beingmainly satisfied, the popuilation will be less satisfied and willlive less qualitative than it would live in the conditions ofrelatively greater material want.

Summary: The paper deals with the concept of education and factorsaffecting it. A strong link is found to exist between the characteristics of educational activities and those relating to the economic, political and cultural subsystems surrounding these activities. Owing to the fact that the development processes linked to education are not fully transparent, specific problems arise in projecting educational changes in post-communist countries. However, this difficulty can be overcome in countries with a pro-European orientation by using permanent education as a conceptual basis, common to educational systems in all developed countries. The paper describes the main characteristics of the social circumstances affecting the development and application of the concept of permanent education.

Summary: This article deals with the problems of forming a scientific system for adult education. The first part contains different concepts of education in developed countries, with a special emphasis on the difference between pedagogy as "practical theory" and the sciences of education that can withstand meta-scientific criteria. This is followed by a survey of the educological system of the knowledge of education, and the scientific and non-scientific knowledge of adult education are contrasted. Toenable us to distinguish unambiguously between scientific and non-scientific knowledge the survey contains some major criteria for determining whether a discipline is a science or not. In this context andragoy, as well as pedagogy, are defined as "technological" disciplines with the task of applying the principles discovered by the sciences of adult education: the educational psychology of adults, the sociology of adult education, the economics of adult education and the educational antropology of adults. In other words andragogy is the "praxiology of adult education" , i.e. the science of applying scientific knowledga about adult education in the practice ofthat eduaction. Andragoga could become "the general science of adult education" and acquire a supra-technological character if it grew into a science of effectiveness of systems of adult education. In that case andragogy would study the interaction between the elements of the system as well as the interaction between these elements and the subsystems of educationalenvironment.

Summary: The universal aim of education is "to contribute to development". Development is that multidimensional economic, social (political), cultural and ecological change which makes possible a higher quality of life. The quality of life constitutes a complex, synthetic experience of the individual's satisfaction/dissatisfaction with life effected through the permanent evaluation and reevaluation of his success in satisfying his needs. Due to this, the quality of life is determined both by the psycho-psychical characteristics of the individual. One of the factors of satisfaction with life is eduaction, being a means of economic and social promotion and of personal realisation. Eduacation is not only a specific factor of the quality of life but is also that mechanism which enhances the awareness of the importance of other factors composing the quality of life. The paper considers the possible contribution of the educational level and interaction between education and other factors of the quality of life with specal reference to the cognitive and connative personality traits.

Title: On the Relationship Between Demographic and Psychological Variables, and the Appraisal of Quality of Life

    Authors:
    Pastuović, Nikola (94256)
    Kolesarić, Vladimir (21736)
    Krizmanić, Mirjana (23641)
    Language: engleski
Summary: The overall quality of life and quality of life in 22 specific life domains were examined on the sample of 536 adult subjects. Multiple regression analysis showed the predictability of different demographic variables (sex, age, family status, education and occupation), intelligence and basic peronality dimensions measured by Eysenck's personality questionnaire. All predictor variables, taken together in a multivariate perspective, accounted for 12% of the overall quality of life variance, and varied amounts of variance of satisfaction with various specific life domains (from 2.4 to 18.0%). The greatest predictive value is attributed to personality variables, followed by demographic variables, whereas intelligence accounted for the least amount of criterion variance. Psychoticism and neuroticism were negatively, extraversion positively related to diverse quality of life measures. Females proved to be more content than males, younger subjects were more content than older.

Title: Can the Quality of Life Be a Universal Goal of Education

    Authors:
    Pastuović, Nikola (94256)
    Language: engleski
Summary: The paper analyzes the system of educational goals which consists of the so called "external" (economic, political, cultural, ecological), and the "internal" ones (cognitive and affective changes of an individual). The common element of all these goals is the fact that they represent the transformation of a particular entity which is usually called the "contribution to the development". The author emphasizes that different developments (economic, political, cultural and psychological) may not only be in a synergic but also in an antagonistic relationship, so that a contribution to one type of development may slow down another. The optimalization of the entire development is possible if the satisfaction of human needs, i.e. the quality of life, is considered to be development criterion. It is then justified to think that the improvement of the quality of life was the essential goal of education. The quality of life is conceptualized as the satisfaction with life. It does not only depend on the objective circumstances an individual lives in but also on his psychic, and primarily emotional and cognitive characteristics. These are the emotional reactivity, the value system, the achievement perception of some important values and the level of aspiration. On that basis the author makes a few hypotheses in regard to the impact of education, and to some subjective factors of satisfaction, which determines the direction and intensity of the impact of education on the quality of life.
Keywords: Quality of life, life satisfaction, education, value system, level of achievement, level of aspiration, emotional reactivity.
