Summary: The main purpose of the research was to assess the
emotionalreaction of children exposed to different levels of the warstress
in Croatia. 480 children completed the Croatian version
of the Child Depression Inventory and the Mood Scale. Theirparents and
teachers also completed the analogue Mood Scale. Bothgroups, refugees and
local children, showed more depressivesymptoms on the CDI in comparison
with the children of the sameage assessed before the war in Croatia.
Displaced childrenmanifested more negative emotions (especially sadness and
fear)than their local peers, based on their self-report, as well as by
their parents' and teachers' report. Poor correlations were foundbetween
the children's self-report and their parents' andteachers' report on the
Mood Scale. It is concluded that the
war stress had a negative impact on the emotional functioning ofall
children, and especially on the refugees. The findings onpoor parents' and
teachers' knowledge about their children'smood, more obvious in the group
of displaced children, deserve aspecial attention because of the increased
risk for the children. It is recommended to consider working with the
parents, not justchildren, in promoting children's mental health.
