    Summary: On a sample of pupils in senior grades of primary school (N:700) the reasons for underachievemt in education are sought after separately in the group of successful as well as in the group of unsuccessful pupils. The initial hypothesis is that cognitive variables are basically responsible for educational underachievement, while motivational determinants are secondary. Discriminant analysis has been applied for establishing relevant variables and ANCOVA was used to establish differences between groups in these variables. The results have confirmed the hypothesis: in the unsuccessful group an analytica deficit has been found, while in teh successful group a global cognitive style has been established as the main determinant of educational underachievement.
